Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League action sees Arsenal make the trip to face Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. This is a big match for the home side with them taking a big loss in the first leg, needing a huge result this time round to avoid elimination.
Over Arsenal’s last five games they have won three and drawn twice, going unbeaten in their last nine match across all competitions now. Real Madrid on the other hand have achieved two wins, two losses and a draw. Getting thrashed by Arsenal in the first leg could give the away side that extra confidence boost this Wednesday.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Real Madrid Predicted Line-Up: Thibaut Courtois; Fran García, Antonio Rüdiger, Raúl Asencio, Federico Valverde; Luka Modric, Aurélien Tchouaméni; Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo; Kylian Mbappé
For the fifth time in the club’s storied history, Real Madrid lost a first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout tie by three or more goals. In four out of those five previous occasions, Real were dumped from the competition, making the last time they came back from such a deficit the 1975/76 season when they coincidentally beat an English side, in the form of Derby County, to see themselves past the Round of 16. Seeing off English sides in the UEFA Champions League has come naturally to Los Blancos over recent years, something that Manchester City and Chelsea have been victims of. Real Madrid are notorious for their comebacks and they are always a threat in the UEFA Champions League competition as the all-time winners of the competition.
Despite receiving a red card in a match against Deportivo Alaves at the weekend, Kylian Mbappé will be cleared to play this Wednesday with Real Madrid in desperate need for the French striker. Alongside Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, all four of them on their day could terrorise any backline but knowing that Gabriel Magalhães will have to be replaced by Jakub Kiwior, someone inexperienced with lots of minutes in elite European football, that will put a smile on their faces. Combining the goal tallies of all four aforementioned Real Madrid players and they have found the back of the net seven, seven, three and five times respectively in UEFA Champions League this season and any one of the could see themselves grab another this Wednesday in a game that Real Madrid will need to score at least four, ideally without reply, to ensure they book their place in the UEFA Champions League Semi Final.
Formation: 4-3-3
Arsenal Predicted Line-Up: David Raya; Myles Lewis-Skelly, Jakub Kiwior, William Saliba, Jurrien Timber; Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Ødegaard; Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka
Arsenal have only managed to reach the UEFA Champions League Semi Finals twice before with the last time coming all the way back in 2009, now 16 years ago. A set-piece masterclass from Declan Rice and a nicely picked out finish from Mikel Merino allowed Arsenal to give out a thrashing to Real Madrid, winning 3-0 at the Emirates last Tuesday. With such a massive lead headed into this second leg, Arsenal will have to be defensively solid, still able to go through even if they fail to win on the road as long as they don’t concede three or more goals.
With injuries to defensive players, Gabriel Magalhães, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyaso all unavailable, Mikel Arteta will have to hope that the back four he fields will be good enough considering the lack of consistent minutes they usually get. If they can’t put on a good defensive display, all hope is not lost however. Real Madrid have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 10 European contests at the Bernabéu, great news for the travelling Arsenal fans to hear. Arsenal have the chance to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games and they have a good chance of doing so seeing as they have found the back of the net in their last eight matches. A historic win is on the cards for the North London outfit this Wednesday but Real Madrid are still formidable opponents.
Before last Tuesday’s clash, these side had not faced each other in a competitive competition in the last five years. The only data to go off is the thrashing that Arsenal handed to Madrid at the Emirates. The second leg at the Bernabéu will not go the same with the home crowd spurring Real Madrid on until the final whistle.
