It’s still the International Break and here at Football Park we have a tip for this Sunday’s UEFA Nations League match between Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
Slovakia will aim to improve in international fixtures after they reached the Round of 16 in Euro 2024 before ultimately being knocked out by runners up England. Their elimination curtesy of global superstar Jude Bellingham’s added minute bicycle kick equaliser before England captain Harry Kane sealed the deal by finding the back of the net in extra time. Slovakia now have the UEFA Nations League to focus on and they will try to go two games in a row with a win.
Thursday night saw them victorious away from home in Tallinn, facing off against Estonia. The Falcons came away with a 0-1 win thanks to youngster Tomas Suslov scoring in the second half, the 70th minute to be precise. With talents like Dubravka, Hancko, Skriniar, Lobotka and Duda all in the team, they should all keep their places in Francesco Calzona’s starting 11 this weekend. Despite what the scoreline might have reflected versus Estonia, Slovakia were very dominate. They attempted 25 total shots, won seven corners, had 61% possession and had an xG of 2.08. Facts like these give indications that they will beat Azerbaijan with ease.
Thursday night had Azerbaijan facing off against Sweden for their first UEFA Nations League match. They eventually went onto losing the match 1-3 but it could have gone massively different had they not squandered a golden opportunity in the first half. Azerbaijan were awarded a penalty in added time at the end of the first half but Ramil Sheydaev was unable to put his country a goal up as he could not convert from 12 yards out. Two goals from Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, both assisted by Victor Gyokeres, before the aforementioned Gyokeres did the opposite of Sheydaev and scored the penalty that Sweden were given.
Azerbaijan have never reached a major tournament, but the appointment of Fernando Santos is something that they will hope can change that statistic. Playing well in these UEFA Nations League matches will give them the indication on whether or not they are ready for the big step up that a major tournament is. In their last three away competitive matches, Azerbaijan have conceded 14 goals, something that desperately needs to improve for them to reach their goal.
Our betting experts have gone with Slovakia To Win + Over 1.5 Goals. Azerbaijan have struggled to keep the ball out of their net when they are away from home, and we expect that this match will be no different. Slovakia have a talented squad that posses a big goal threat, especially as they had 25 shots against Estonia in their previous match.
