European Champions Spain resume their Nations League quest this Saturday when Denmark visit the Estadio Enrique Roca de Murcia.
Denmark actually lead the group after picking up wins against Serbia and Switzerland in their opening two games. Spain also beat Switzerland, but had to settle for a point against Serbia in their first game.
This then, is a top of the group clash, where stakes couldn’t be higher. So let's take a look at the key information about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Spain Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): David Raya (GK); Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Torres, Marcos Llorente; Fabian Ruiz, Martin Zubimendi, Pedri; Nico Williams, Joselu, Lamine Yamal.
While Spain may well be the current champions of Europe, they are certainly not at full strength this international break.
Missing Dani Caravajal at right-back, Rodri at the base of midfield, and Robin Le Normand at center back, Spain look set to rely some of their squad depth and rotation options.
This is not to say that their back up players aren’t talented. They have a phenomenal bench, including the likes of Alejandro Grimaldo, Ferran Torres, Yeremy Pino and Pedri, who all typically have to make do with cameo’s off the bench.
Spain’s current injury platform provides them with an opportunity to impress coach Luis De La Fuente and give them the chance at securing a starting spot for themselves.
Denmark Predicted Lineup (3-4-3): Kasper Schmeichel (GK), Joachim Andersen, Jannik Vestergaard, Rasmus Kristensen; Joakim Maehle, Christian Norgaard, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Alexander Bah; Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Hojlund, Andreas Skov Olsen.
Will be elated with the start to their Nations League campaign, two wins from two games by someone other than the typical international giants is an impressive feat, and to boost them further, Denmark are suffering from none of the injuries their opponents are.
In fact, their players are returning from injury, such as Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund. Following an injury in pre-season, Hojlund missed the first two months of United’s competitive season, but made a goalscoring return in the Europa League against Porto.
Denmark will be glad to have their talisman back, and with attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen and Mikkel Damsgaard both in good form for their clubs, it has suddenly become a very competitive starting eleven to get into.
Last five meetings:
While Denmark are the current surprise group toppers, Spain’s squad is far stronger even with injuries to some of their key players.
They hold the home advantage for this game, and the Spanish crowds always seem to provide them with a big momentum boost, acting as that fabled twelfth man. That is why we predict a straightforward Spanish victory, although Denmark will certainly have their chances.
Spain 3-1 Denmark
Spain’s dynamic young wingers will wreak havoc on the Danish wing backs. Maehle and Bah may be terrific players in their own right, but they are no match for Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams respectively, both of whom are £100 million pound players.
They will be the primary attacking outlet for Spain, and if they start quickly, as they typically do, all the damage will be done in the first half. Denmark will threaten, and likely grab at least one, but it won’t be enough.
