It is only the second gameweek of the Belgian Pro League, but it is already throwing up a tasty fixture with Standard Liege hosting Club Brugge. Historically, these two clubs have been incredibly successful domestically winning a combined total of 29 league titles, however recent history hasn’t been kind to Standard Liege.
Their last league title came in 2009 and they haven’t even won the Belgian Cup since 2018. Since then, they have had to settle for mid-table mediocrity, finishing 10th last season. Club Brugge have had the opposite fortune recently. They have won the league on six occasions since 2009, including four of the last five seasons. The only blip came in the 2022/23 season where they finished fourth under a number of managers including Scott Parker.
Both teams come into the game on a single point having drawn their opening matches. Liege had a difficult opening fixture against Genk, but they managed to return home with a nil-nil draw. Club Brugge’s opening result was perhaps a bit of a shock as they failed to beat Mechelen at home despite having 27 shots.
Brugge have the players and the quality to sweep aside Liege without much difficulty, but I think that this game will be a lot closer than expected. Interestingly, both sides had pre-season friendlies against Norwich. Brugge won easily by three goals to nil, but Liege drew 1-1. That could be telling about how this game will go.
If Brugge want to challenge for the league title again, they’ll need to start the season strongly, which means a response is needed to their disappointing opening game. I don’t see them throwing any more points away this weekend, despite their opponents.
Our team of experts have decided that the best tip for this game is half-time draw, full-time Club Brugge. With 7/2 odds on CopyBet, a £10 bet could see potential returns of £46.
