This Monday’s Championship game sees Portsmouth make the trip to face Stoke City United at the bet365 Stadium. This result could have serious implications for league going forward seeing as hosts Stoke are only two points clear of their opponents Portsmouth.
Both of these sides have not started this season well at all. Stoke City are only two places above the relegation zone whereas Portsmouth are in the bottom three and therefore part of that drop zone. This match could determine where these teams will be playing next year as they both have sides capable of remaining in the Championship another year but the way they are playing as of now does not showcase that well.
Stoke’s go to man this season has been Million Manhoef as he’s picked up three goal involvement within the first seven domestic league matches but Portsmouth’s Callum Lang has one better with one less match under his belt.
Predicted Line-Up: Viktor Johansson; Eric-Junior Bocat, Ben Gibson, Ben Wilmot, Junior Tchamadeu; Jun-ho Bae, Jordan Thompson, Wouter Burger, Lewis Koumas; Million Manhoef; Tom Cannon
Stoke have slowly been on the decline in the Championship over the last five years. Last year saw them ending the season in 17th place and they seem like they are still heading in a downwards direction as after seven games they are sat in 20th with six points after seven matches. Their record is two wins, five losses and zero draws. The season isn’t by no means over for them as if other results go their way as well as beating Portsmouth, they could climb up to as high as 12th.
The Potters have invested well over the summer bringing in young talent who have good potential, the like of Lewis Koumas from Liverpool being the main example. They have also stolen from one of their relegation rivals last year, Blackburn Rovers. Striker Sam Gallagher is now on Stoke’s books. The standout has to be Million Manhoef though who has amassed two goals and an assist in the Championship so far and he’ll be a great player to sway this match in their favour.
Predicted Line-Up: Will Norris; Jacob Farrell, Tom McIntyre, Reegan Poole, Zak Swanson; Freddie Potts, Marlon Pack (c); Sam Silvera, Josh Murphy, Paddy Lane; Mark O’Mahony
On their seventh year in League One, last season Portsmouth finally made it out and back into the Championship after a 12 season stint. They were crowned champions with a five point gap to second place in Derby County. However, the Championship has been a bit of a challenge as seven games in, they look likely to go back down. Sat inside the relegation zone in 23rd, Portsmouth have yet to pick up a win. They have achieved four draws and three losses, leaving them on four points.
Pompey have found goals in the form of Callum Lang who has bagged three goals and an assist. He would be the difference maker for Portsmouth in this game if he were not currently injured with an expected return date of mid October. The next player would be Christian Saydee who has scored twice this season, but we are not expecting John Mousino to start him in this one against Stoke.
There have been 34 matches where these two teams have faced each other throughout history.
Portsmouth hold the advantage over Stoke by a just two wins, as they have 15 wins to Stokes’s 13. There has been six times where these two clubs could not find a winner making Portsmouth’s win ratio in this fixture 44.12%.
However, the last time that these two clubs played against each other was 10 years ago, a League Cup (now called the Carabao Cup) match back in the 2014/15 season. The victors that day were Stoke as they progressed through to the Third Round after winning 3-0.
Both of these teams have struggle in the opening seven games of the season, but Portsmouth more given their lack of wins. Stoke have been struggling to find players to provide goals for them but this could be the match that they get their season properly started with Portsmouth’s top scorer currently injured.
For that reason, our betting experts have gone with Stoke City To Win as our best value tip for this game.
Odds of 5/6 mean that a £10 bet has the potential to return up to £18.33 in this match.
(odds subject to change)
Stoke City 2-1 Portsmouth
We can see Stoke grabbing an early goal and then a late second half winner to seal all three points and get them away from the drop zone. Portsmouth could score but we can see them collapse defensively late on.
