Torino vs Lazio Prediction

League leaders Torino invite Lazio away from the capital and to Turin, more specifically the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino Stadium, to see if they can remain on top of the table come the final whistle at the end of 90 minutes.

Torino vs Lazio

Key Stats

  • Lazio have won the previous 2 games against Torino
  • Torino’s Vanja Milinković-Savić is ranked 2nd in the league for saves per match (4.2)
  • Lazio’s Nuno Tavares is ranked 1st in the league for big chances created (4)
  • Torino have score 7 times in their last 5 games whereas Lazio have scored 9 in their last 5

Team Previews, Form and Standout Players

To the shock of many fans, Torino are sitting in first place in the league standings after the first five games of the season. They have the chance to extend their lead of one point come the end of the weekend but Lazio coming to their stadium, they won’t make it an easy task.

Torino and Lazio have both got a player each in great form at the moment so either one of them could be the difference in this match. Torino’s Ché Adams grabbed two goals and an assist in his first five games so far whereas Lazio’s Valentín Castellanos has amassed three goals in four. Both have three goal contributions so it is a question of who can be the one to change the game and improve on their individual tallies.

Torino Preview

Predicted Line-Up: Vanja Milinković-Savić; Adam Masina, Guillermo Maripán, Sebastian Walukiewicz; Borna Sosa, Ivan Ilić, Samuele Ricci, Adrien Tamèze, Valentino Lazaro; Duván Zapata, Antonio Sanabria

It has been 13 years since Torino was last not in the Serie A and they have held their own in the topflight in that time. This season has been superlative as they currently sit top of the table after the initial five games in the league. They started the season with an unexpected 2-2 draw with AC Milan, Noah Okafor having to equalise in the fifth minute of added time for Milan to salvage a point. Torino then went onto have back to back victories, 2-1 and 0-1 versus Atalanta and newly promoted side Venezia respectively. Their most recent match was a 2-3 away win against Hellas Verona but they weren’t able to repeat the trick of another two consecutive wins as in match week four they shared a point with Lecce after a goalless stalemate.

Il Toro’s great opening to this year’s campaign could be attributed to their smart signings during the summer transfer window. They lost two defensive stars in centre back Alessandro Buongiorno to Napoli and right back Raoul Bellanova to Atalanta for a combined fee of €55 million. They took that money and invested in talents that cost almost half that price.

Centre backs Saúl Coco, Sebastian Walukiewicz and Guillermo Maripán were all brought in by the club this season with the combined fee for those three players was only €14.5 million. Torino also brought in experienced Serie A striker and now club captain for this season, Duván Zapata. It hasn’t just been permanent signings either, loan spells for Borna Sosa and Marcus Pedersen have them staying until the end of the season. The best deal however has been the free acquisition of former Southampton striker Ché Adams who has found the back of the net twice this season making him the club’s join top scorer so far.

Lazio Preview

Predicted Line-Up: Ivan Provedel; Nuno Tavares, Mario Gila, Alessio Romangoli, Manuel Lazzari; Nicolò Rovella, Mattéo Guendouzi; Mattia Zaccagni, Boulaye Dia, Gustav Isaksen; Valentín Castellanos

Kicking off the season with a 3-1 win against newly promoted side Venezia on opening weekend, Lazio haven’t been able to replicate that across the last two games. A 2-1 loss versus Udinese was the aftermath of their second game and in their most recent they let a lead slip with 20 minutes to go. AC Milan capitalised and come the final whistle, a 2-2 draw the end result. Hellas Verona was their next challenge, and they overcame that, beating them 2-1 but it was back to losing in their most recent domestic match as Lazio were handed their second defeat of the season at the hands of Fiorentina, a 2-1 on the road loss at the end of 90 minutes.

Outside of Italy and they took part in the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday, travelling to Ukraine to face Dynamo Kyiv. They left with all three points, one for each goal they scored, heading back to Italy with a 0-3 win. The match ended on a bit of a sour note for them as they were forced to play the remaining eight minutes a man down as Tijjani Noslin was shown a red card just three minutes after being substituted onto the pitch.

Le Aquile have had a busy summer transfer window with comings and goings and some of their absences could be a reason for their last two games. Luis Alberto finally left the club after seeming like he would earn a top move away for years. Veteran Serie A striker Cirro Immobile joined Turkish side Besiktas and other key players like Daichi Kamada and Felipe Anderson left as free transfers to Crystal Palace and Palmeiras respectively.

Lazio did do some purchasing off their own and they secured the permanent services of former Arsenal midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi after he spent last season at the club. More players coming from the North London club and Nuno Tavares was picked up on a loan spell and he seems like he’s settling in well, recording three assists in those first five games, putting him as the top assister in the Serie A at this point in time.

Head To Head Stats: Torino vs Lazio

There have been just 150 matches where these two teams have faced each other throughout history.

It might be surprising for a few but despite Lazio being in the topflight of Italian football for 37 years, 24 years more experience than Torino’s 13 hasn’t made a difference in the head to head stats. Torino actually have the advantage over Lazio, winning 45 of those games. Lazio have managed to beat their opponents in this match 44 times and a draw between the two sides has occurred 61 times. A close affair with not much splitting each team.

The last five faceoffs have been split in Lazio’s favour, winning twice and sharing a point in a draw twice as well. Torino have won once in that time span, and they could add to their record versus Lazio in this match.

Betting Tips For Torino vs Lazio

Despite Lazio having won the last two meeting between these sides, Torino have been in phenomenal form, their first place (before all this week’s Serie A fixtures take place) standing as proof. Lazio still have something to offer in this match as well with striker Valentín Castellanos joint second in the Golden Boot race on three goals from the four domestic matches that he’s played in and Boulaye Dia grabbing a brace in their Europa League match against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday.

Final Prediction: Torino vs Lazio

Torino 1-1 Lazio

Torino have had an incredible start to the season, but they struggle to keep the ball, focusing on counter attacking football by playing it out quickly to either the striker or wingers. They put in much better performances whilst at home, however we can also see Lazio grabbing a goal early before trying to sit back and defending for the rest of the match, but Torino are a force not to be reckoned with at the moment.
