Sunday’s early kick-off sees two sides take each other on after experiencing contrasting midweek cup performances.
Tottenham come into the game on a high, after holding out to win 2-1 against eight time winners and the best team in England, Manchester City. It was a mature performance from a relatively inexperienced side, with teenagers Archie Gray and Mikey Moore looking at home and up to speed in the time they were on the field.
Villa on the other hand suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace, who’s win over Tottenham at the weekend seems to have given them a sudden boost of confidence. They were the better team, and when looking at the stats should have won, but wasteful finishing cost them the win and a spot in the quarterfinals.
As we see both return to league action on Sunday, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Tottenham Hotspur Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Guilherme Vicario (GK); Destiny Udogie,Radu Dragusin, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro; James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski; Timo Werner, Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson.
Despite their superb win over Manchester City, Spurs will be apprehensive about hosting Villa. Not only did the Villains beat them on their home turf in the same fixture last season, but they will also be without captain and star forward Son Heung Min, as well as their best defender Micky Van Der Ven after he left the pitch early against City.
The milestone victory in midweek was a big moment for Spurs, and particularly for coach Ange Postecoglou, who in the past has become known for winning a trophy in his second season with a club. Wednesday night was a big step towards seeing that prophecy come true yet again, but to achieve it, Postecoglou will need all of his key players fit, something he cannot boast this weekend.
He does however have strong back-up options. Timo Werner’s return to the scoresheet will be a big relief for both him and the squad as a whole, and to have him confident is to have a dangerous backup in Son’s position. Youngsters Gray and Moore can also have noticeable impacts off the bench.
But it will always be Postecoglou’s mind that if his best attacker and defender are out injured, they are always just that little bit futrter away from a brilliant contribution at both ends of the pitch.
Aston Villa Predicted Lineup (4-4-1-1): Emiliano Martinez (GK); Ian Maatsen, Pau Torres, Ezro Konsa, Matty Cash; Jacob Ramsey, Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana, John McGinn; Morgan Rodgers, Ollie Watkins.
While Aston Villa have no such injury issues to worry about, they will be slightly concerned at their defeat to Palace. Prior to last weekend, Palace were winless this season, save for a win in the cup over QPR.
Whilst Villa dominated the game, and had countless openings for Jhon Duran, he could only take one of them, and Daichi Kamada’s 64th minute strike was enough to sink the men in claret and blue.
Whilst it was not their strongest lineup, featuring the likes of back-ups in Digne and Duran, but it was still a strong side, one that should be beating the struggling Eagles’, and Unai Emery may need to go away and rethink how his side can score more goals, as they are on a relatively barren run in front of goals.
They tend to score, but not many, and goals will be crucial if they are to repeat last seasons victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Recent meetings:
Clinical in front of goal against City, Spurs may once again need to resort to counter attacks here, as in losing Van Der Ven and Son, they lose some of their ability to play the high line they typically employ, made possible by the Dutchman's pace.
Meanwhile, Villa need to show some bounce back ability here, and a win away to fellow top four contenders will be just the medicine they needed. They will be a major threat and will likely control the game, but I doubt they will be able to outscore a Spurs team that is focused on sitting back.
We are backing a draw between the two, though it will be an entertaining one.
Tottenham 2-2 Aston Villa.
If Timo Werner can finish like he did against Manchester City, he will be a constant threat on the left wing, and I can see him bagging another one here.
However, with the combined threat of the starting Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran off the bench, Villa always have an equalizing goal in them, and I reckon Duran will finish off the scoring late on here.
