With the Bundesliga restarting last weekend, there are now some incredibly exciting fixtures coming up in the German top division which could have massive impacts for the whole season. One of these games is VFL Bochum vs St. Pauli as both teams are towards the bottom of the table and in desperate need of points.
Bochum’s only win all season came just before the winter break against fellow strugglers Heidenheim. They have just six points so far this campaign and could end up being the worst Bundesliga side of all time. Last time out they lost 2-0 against a strong Mainz side.
St. Pauli are an interesting team, as their matches tend to be low scoring. Even when they have played against Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, the matches have ended 1-0. Their most recent win came just before the winter break, beating Stuttgart 1-0 away from home.
VFL Bochum Predicted Lineup - Patrick Drewes; Bernardo, Ivan Ordets, Tim Oermann; Maximillian Wittek, Matus Bero, Anthony Losilla, Ibrahima Sissoko, Felix Passlack; Mortiz Broschinski, Philipp Hofmann
Bochum just don’t have many stand out players who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and earn the team three points. Myron Boadu and Dani de Wit have been two of the club’s best performing players in the attack, but manager Dieter Hecking has preferred to use them from the bench lately. Matus Bero is probably the most exciting player to watch in the team, but he doesn’t always produce the magic that his side needs.
St. Pauli Predicted Lineup - Nikola Vasilj; David Nemeth, Eric Smith, Hauke Wahl; Philipp Treu, Carlo Boukhalfa, Jackson Irvine, Manolis Saliakas; Dapo Afolayan, Morgan Guilavogui; Danel Sinani
St Pauli don’t have many goalscorers in their squad so they prefer to earn points by being defensively astute and solid at the back. They have only conceded 20 goals so far this season, with just Bayern Munich conceding less. On the flip side, they have scored the least goals in the league, with 12. Australian midfielder Jackson Irvine has managed four assists in the league this season, which means that he is responsible for a third of all of St. Pauli’s goals.
Neither of these two sides are top flight regulars so almost all of their previous meetings have come in the second tier of German football. Recently, the results have tended to be draws, however there was a period, between 2014 and 2017 in which St. Pauli were dominant.
28th Jan 2021 - St. Pauli 2-3 Bochum - 2. Bundesliga
21th Sep 2020 - Bochum 2-2 St. Pauli - 2. Bundesliga
5th Jun 2020 - Bochum 2-0 St. Pauli - 2. Bundesliga
8th Nov 2019 - St. Pauli 1-1 Bochum - 2. Bundesliga
12th May 2019 - St. Pauli 0-0 Bochum - 2. Bundesliga
This game will probably be low scoring given both side’s record in front of goal. It will be close but St. Pauli have a very good defense that will be hard for Bochum to break down. Should St. Pauli create a chance, then there is a good chance that they will score and thus take all three points.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for St. Pauli to Win. Odds of 9/5 on Betfred means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £28.
(odds subject to change)
