Wycombe Wanderers welcome Aston Villa for the third round of the 2024/25 EFL Cup with both sides off the back of league victories. The English fixture schedule is relentless, and see’s Aston Villa play their third game in the last week. However, that won’t stop Unai Emery’s side wanting to get closer to that trip to Wembley.
This match of course has Aston Villa as the clear favourites. However, after Wycombe knocked Championship side Swansea City out of the cup in the last round, they’ll certainly be up for the fight.
Possible Line-up: Franco Ravizzoli; Daniel Harvie, Joe Low, Caleb Taylor, Jack Grimmer; Josh Scowen, Aaron Morley; Cameron Humphreys, Daniel Udoh, Garath McCleary; Richard Kone.
Wycombe Wanderers have had a very strong last six games. They’ve won five and drawn just once since the end of August. A very fine display from Matt Bloomfield’s side.
They come into this game as the underdogs, and will probably lose. However, in front of a home crowd, their supporters will walk away proud of their performance in the cup so far, with wins over Northampton Town and Derby County.
This season it’s been the veterans who have scored the joint most goals for the home side. Gareth McLeary (37) and Sam Vokes (34) both have two league goals. A standout performer though has been 20-year-old Cameron Humphreys. The midfielder has excelled and contributed to some match winning moments already in the league.
Possible Line-up: Emiliano Martínez; Lucas Digne, Pau Torres, Diego Carlos, Ezri Konsa; Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana; Jacob Ramsey, Morgan Rogers, John McGinn; Ollie Watkins.
Aston Villa are showing season after season that they belong at the top end of the Premier League. They’ve bounced back from their relegation all those years ago, and now look like they only ever lose to the top teams (Arsenal this season). They’ve won four of their first five league games whilst 3rd in the league.
They also returned to the Champions league last week for the first time since 1982, and thrashed Young Boys 3-0 in their own backyard. Because of their European inclusion, they are yet to have played in the EFL Cup so far.
The standout performer for Villa so far has arguably been Amadou Onana. The 23-year-old signed from Everton in the summer, and already has three goals to his name. He has also been an anchor in midfield and a vital part of Emery's starting eleven already. Meanwhile, striker Jhon Duran has been their top scorer with four goals in all competitions.
The last time these two met was in the 2016 FA Cup. They drew 1-1 initially but it was Aston Villa who took the game home and won 2-0 in the end.
In history, these two sides have played each other competitively on four occasions. Aston Villa won three of them and drew the other.
We’re backing Aston Villa to win this match, and for there to be over 2.5 goals scored in the match. Through our bookmakers, you can get odds of 8/11 which would return £17.27 from a £10 stake.
Villa are one of the most deadly sides in the whole of English football right now. Even when their starting players aren’t available, the squad depth is immaculate, and enough to break down almost every side lower than the Premier League.
The away side for this game have also scored at least two goals in every game apart from one so far this campaign. 13 goals scored, seven conceded.
Wycombe Wanderers 0-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa will not take any risks at a chance to get closer to a first trophy since 1996. They will dominate this game with a comfortable scoreline.
