10 Best Players to Have Never Won the Premier League (Ranked)

As we know, it is many players' dream to play in the Premier League. Widely considered the greatest league in football, many players have played in the league. Among those players there have been some true world-class players who have honoured the English top flight. Now some of them joined and walked away as a champion of England; however, some of these spent their careers in England and never got that honour. Today we will be looking at and ranking the 10 best players to have never won the league.

First, some base rules. These players must have played in the league for at least 3 seasons. This makes sure that they have had multiple chances of winning the competition.

10 – Heung-Min Son

One of the players that makes up the most dangerous duo in Premier League football. Son was truly one of the best wingers the league has seen during his time in England for Tottenham Hotspur, and he proved that he was definitely the level of a player who should have multiple league trophies. After a decade at Spurs, Son never managed to help them over the line, with the closest time being in 2016/17, where they finished second. He will go down as one of the Premier League greats and a Spurs legend; however, that Premier League title will always remain elusive to him.

9 – David Ginola

Similar to Son, Ginola is a cult hero for those clubs that he played for. A technically gifted winger and someone who entertained the fans who watched him. While not having the greatest output, his technical ability made up for that. However, he never managed to get to the elite level where he would lift the league. Playing for four teams over his seven seasons in England, he could never help those teams lift the title. This will be one of the reasons that stops him from being remembered as a true legend of the league.

8 – Matt Le Tissier

One of the great players who never made the move to one of the elite teams. This is arguably the main reason for why he never lifted the league. In a period that prioritised physical ability, he was different. One of the single greatest natural talents that England has ever seen, and the league has ever seen. Le Tissier is one of the greatest natural footballers the league has seen; however, his loyalty to Southampton ultimately didn’t allow him any Premier League success apart from individual honours. With a high football IQ, incredible ball striking and the greatest penalty taker the country has seen, his spot on this list is deserved.

7 – Robbie Fowler

A Liverpool academy product that would become the face of the club during the 90s. Fowler was an elite striker. His ability to shoot with both feet combined with the fact he didn’t need many chances to score allowed him to become one of the best strikers in the league. To add onto this, his PFA Player of the Year in the 1995/96 season and Golden Boot in the 1997/98 season, you can see how elite he was.

His main issue was the fact it was the wrong time. Liverpool was going through a period of change. At this point, Liverpool was very transitional. He was too late for the elite teams of the past and too early to see their dominance alongside Manchester City. Unfortunately, his timing didn’t allow him to win the league title, something Liverpool wanted so badly.

6 – Gareth Bale

Yet another Spurs player on the list and someone who would end up having a career filled with trophies. Bale was one of the greatest talents the league had seen. After breaking through with Southampton in the 2006/07 season, Spurs would sign him, and he would be there for 6 seasons. In those seasons he would change from a full-back to a winger who would have the world at his feet. Quick, powerful, and dangerous, Bale was the whole package.

However, like everyone else, he wasn’t at the team that could provide him with silverware. In a league that had Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United fighting for the league, it was always going to be difficult, and it proved too hard for Bale and Spurs.

5 – Gianfranco Zola

One of the first players to play for a team that won the Premier League multiple times. Zola was just before that period. One of the greatest players to have ever worn the Chelsea shirt and even with all their success, he wasn’t able to lift the league. Elite close control, dead ball ability and vision: Zola was one of the greatest players to play in the league. In the end his greatest job was changing the team; Chelsea went from a team that occasionally won trophies and competed to an actual team to scare people. Zola was the head of that.

His biggest issue is similar to Fowler's. He was too early. While he had his success and trophies, he was a few years too early to see the league title in his hands. One of the most excellent and gifted players in the league and a true wizard. Zola’s place in this list is well earned.

4 – Luis Suárez

One of the greats. Not just in the Premier League, but ever. He is widely considered the greatest striker of this generation and that is well deserved. So how did he not win the league? Even when breaking records for goal scoring, he couldn’t help Liverpool to a title, as they just fell short at the final hurdle. Technically gifted, clinical, amazing link-up play. Suarez had everything. However, even with all that, he wasn’t able to help them to a league title.

Suarez was inches away from finally helping Liverpool end their dry spell in 2013/14 when they finished second, only 2 points behind Manchester City. In the end the biggest issue was Liverpool just not being able to get it over the line; they had everything but just couldn’t finish out the season.

3 – Harry Kane

Going from one elite striker to another. Kane is one of the greatest strikers the world has ever seen. Deadly finishing combined with excellent passing and football IQ. He is the second part of that most dangerous duo. However, even when combining with Son, he couldn’t do it. Even with his goal scoring and creating metrics, he was never able to get it over the line. While linked with multiple other clubs in the Premier League, he stuck with Spurs, and that stopped him from lifting the league. Mixed finishes and constant changes after Pochettino left; he was never able to get his hands on it.

However, possibly the main reason was the competition Spurs were facing. Chelsea at the start of his career, then followed by years of Liverpool and Manchester City dominating the league. He could never find that trophy. In the end he left and has now got his league trophy he deserves at Bayern Munchen.

2 – Paul Gascoigne

One of those players who could flip a game on its head by himself. Gazza was a technical wizard. Flair and technical ability were all in his game. He was a true big-game player and could help a team to success when he was on the pitch. Unpredictable and creative, he had everything to be a league winner and help a team to a title.

However, that was when he was on the pitch. The factor holding him back from that league title was a mix between his poor discipline and injury record. Someone who could get easily irritated and this cost him. Not having your best player available for all 38 matches will affect any team and will stop you from winning a league. This is what stopped him.

1 – Steven Gerrard

Who else could it be? Mr Liverpool himself. Gerrard was part of that Liverpool team that finished second and alongside Suarez, was so close to winning the league. He was world-class wherever he was played in the middle; work rate, defending, and attacking – he had everything. Someone who should have led Liverpool and captained them to a league title. However, he fell short, and unfortunately it was as a result of his mistake.

One of the most unfortunate moments in Premier League history, Liverpool faced Chelsea, and with Liverpool chasing City, they needed all 3 points, and it would put them in a perfect place to win the league. However, Gerrard had what is now one of the most iconic moments in history as he slipped. In the end, this cost him and Liverpool the league, as Chelsea went on to win that match.

Overall, this list shows that you don’t need a league title to prove that you are a legend of the game and one of the greatest. All of these players are Premier League legends and will be remembered for years even without league titles.
