10 Greatest French Players of all Time

As we all know, France is one of the powerhouses in Europe when it comes to football. Over the years they have had many world-class and elite players. However, who are the greatest they have ever seen? That is what we will be looking into today, seeing who was the best for France and at club level.

10 – Antoine Griezmann

We start our list off with a current player and someone who has been a great servant at both the international and domestic levels. Currently 35 years old, we could be seeing Griezmann play his last tournament for France this summer.

We start off his claim to this list 8 years ago in Russia, where he played a vital part in France's attack as they lifted the World Cup. Providing 6 goals and assists in 7 matches, he was pivotal to their success alongside the other forwards. However, his best season was the 2015/16 season, where he achieved a Champions League final with Atletico Madrid, scoring 32 goals for them and finishing 3rd in the Ballon d’Or rankings. Truly one of France's greats.

9 – Lilian Thuram

One of Frances's greatest defenders ever. He could play on both the right side as a centre back and would play at the highest level on either side. His pace, physicality and ability to read the game made him a world-class all-round defender.

His highest point for France came in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, where they faced Croatia. After going 1-0 behind, the defender would pop up, scoring a brace and taking them to the World Cup final. Truly a French legend and one of the greatest to have ever played for them.

8 – Claude Makelele

France have always made incredible midfielders and Makelele is one of the greatest they have ever made. Sitting in front of the defence, he would shield them from most things throughout the game, dictating the tempo of the game. With his strength, intelligence and knowing exactly where he needed to be at all times. The perfect shield for a defence.

He was one of the greats at the time. Slotted into the Galácticos' midfield as well as being a huge reason behind Mourinho’s early Chelsea success, including the record season. With a position and role being named after him, it shows just how good he was: back-to-back Premier League champions, a World Cup final and an irreplaceable player, he deserves his place on this list.

7 – Frank Ribery

A player that seemed more Brazilian than French. He was the flair of any team he played for. Quick acceleration, low centre of gravity and great agility made him a nightmare for defenders. He would always look to run at and take on defenders looking to push his team forward.

The top of his career came in 2013 as he helped Bayern Munich to the treble that season. However, in what is now seen as one of the biggest injustices in history around the Ballon d'Or, he lost out. However, many people believe he was a more than deserving winner that year. While he wasn’t as key for France as other players, he was still their main man after the golden generation after his breakout tournament in 2006. Unfortunately, his lack of accolades for France stops him from placing higher.

6 – Patrick Vieira

As we spoke about earlier with Makelele, we see yet another one of France's great midfielders. Vieira is one of the greatest midfielder’s football and the Premier League has ever seen. His height, strength and intelligence allowed him to dominate the middle of the park.

So, what sets him apart from Makelele? Like Makelele, he was vital for his clubs, being a key member in the Invincibles as well as Arsenal throughout the early years of the Premier League. However, he also won the Euro 2000 and the 1998 World Cup, giving him that edge of Makelele. With these trophies behind him, he places in 6th place among the greatest French players ever.

5 – Karim Benzema

At the halfway point we see the first person who won the Ballon d'Or and the second active player. One of the greatest strikers of the last generation, Benzema was a staple forward at Real Madrid for over a decade. However, it was his penultimate season that he truly showed his level. Scoring 44 goals and getting 15 assists in 46 games while winning the UCL and Ballon d'Or.

While he wasn’t the fastest player in the world, his intelligence and killer instinct made him what he was. Always arriving at the right time and finding the space to punish teams. Benzema found himself overshadowed at Madrid for a while, often being the understudy to Ronaldo, but after he left and he was allowed to be the main man, we saw just how good he was. However, as a result of his very limited time with France, he can’t place any higher. World-class player domestically, however, not at the international level.

4 – Kylian Mbappe

We now find ourselves with the final active player on the list. Mbappe is one of the best players in the world currently. His pace, finishing and dribbling make him a world-class forward across the entire front line. After 308 games in the French capital, he had 256 goals and now after making his long-awaited move to the Spanish capital, he has 82 goals in 94 matches. He truly is one of the best strikers in the world.

However, it isn’t just his domestic ability. He was one of the key players in France's 2018 World Cup victory and did everything possible in 2022, scoring the first hat trick in a final since Pelé. He now finds himself 1 goal away from levelling up as France's all-time top goal scorer, something he could very likely achieve at the World Cup this summer. Definitely the best French player currently active, he could become their greatest ever when he retires.

3 – Thierry Henry

The man who sits in front of Mbappe is someone who could be seen as the original version of him. Someone who started as a winger and moved more central as he matured. Henry was one of the greatest players the world has ever seen: quick, direct, and dominant. He had absolutely everything to be an elite forward. Widely considered the best player to have ever played in the Premier League, it isn’t a shock he is here.

The reason he sits just above Mbappé is that while Mbappé, like Henry, won the World Cup, Henry added a Euros to his name. This is what just places him higher; however, Mbappé could likely top him come the end of his career. However, for now Henry sits with the bronze medal in France's greatest of all time.

2 – Michel Platini

The oldest player on this list, however, is one of the best. The midfielder is yet again an example of France's ability to make elite-level players of this type. He is more attacking than the others with his creative ability; goal-scoring and technical ability are what made him so unplayable. He was dominant in every area of the position he played. He would dictate and control the attack, leading France to a Euros in 1984, where he would score 9 goals in 5 matches.

However, what truly sets him apart is, like some of the others, he is a Ballon d'Or winner. However, he is the first multiple-time winner, winning 3. This truly just shows his elite level and dominance over the period he played and over his prime. Very much one of France's and football's greats, his place as second is more than deserved.

1 – Zinedine Zidane

Who else could it be? Not just Frances's greatest ever, but also one of the greatest players ever. Madrid legend, Juventus legend and French legend. He had everything: physically strong, quick, a a powerful dribbler, creative, an elite finisher, and perfect work rates. He was everything you would want in a player.

He was the main man in the 1998 World Cup final, scoring a brace as France won, as well as being a key player in the 2000 Euros. While he is seen as costing France a World Cup, he is still their greatest ever player. He won everything he could while a player with both Juventus and Real Madrid. He was the only answer when looking for Frances's greatest-ever player.

Overall, France has had many world-class players, with many unfortunately missing out. However, these are the players who have done the most at club level alongside the international team. Some are doing more for one than the other; however, some of these players could see places change, especially Kylian Mbappé.
