10 More Players Who Have Scored Hat-Tricks and Lost after Big Bad Brian Brobbey Makes History

This weekend the Etihad Stadium witnessed an eight goal thriller as Sunderland lost 5-3 to the table toppers Manchester City. Prior to kick off, Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey was yet to get on the scoresheet so far in the 2026/27 campaign. However, that certainly didn't affect him as he went on to score a superb hat-trick and mark a fantastic individual performance.

Unfortunately Brobbey’s three goals wasn’t enough to get the win for the away side and they came away from the match with nothing, meaning the Dutch striker was the first player to score a Premier League hat-trick and still lose the game since Roque Santa Cruz in 2007. Despite the result, Brobbey can take a lot from his performance that could help to inspire a successful season in both domestic and European competitions.

Let’s take a look at ten other players that have scored hat-tricks and gone on to lose matches.

10 More Players Who Have Scored Hat-Tricks and Lost after Big Bad Brian Brobbey Makes History

10. Dwight Yorke

During his time at Villa Park, Dwight Yorke only managed to score one Premier League hat-trick but that wasn’t enough to overcome Brian Little’s Newcastle team. Yorke opened the scoring but Villa found themselves down to 10-men and 3-1 down at half time. Yorke added two more in the second half but the game finished 4-3 to the Magpies.

9. Elye Wahi

This is one of the more recent hat-tricks on this list as Elye Wahi went one further than a hat-trick and scored four for Montpellier in 2023 in a Ligue 1 clash with Lyon. Wahi actually scored all of his goals to put Montpellier 4-1 up, but Alexandre Lacazette took matters into his own hands in the second half to complete a stunning comeback and win the game 5-4.

8. Matt Le Tissier

Matt Le Tissier is definitely one of the best strikers that the Premier League has seen and he managed to score four Premier League hat-tricks during his time on the south-coast with Southampton. However, Le Tissier actually lost two of those games that he scored three in to both Oldham and Nottingham Forest in 1993 and 1995, both games ending 4-3.

7. Dion Dublin

Shortly after Matt Le Tissier lost his second game that he had scored a hat-trick in, Dion Dublin joined the crew. Dublin scored three goals at Hillsborough for Coventry City, however it wasn’t enough for the Sky Blues to pick up three points and Dublin joined a rather unfortunate list of taking home the match ball in a loss.

6. Phillipe Coutinho

Phillipe Coutinho became the second most expensive transfer of all time as he moved from Liverpool to Barcelona back in 2018. His time in Spain didn’t quite work out as he would have hoped, however he still managed to score three against Levante in 2018. Barcelona were on track to go unbeaten but fell short at the second to last hurdle as Levante won the game 5-4 and made the day that little bit worse for Coutinho.

5. Gareth Bale

Tottenham Hotspur were 4-0 down in the UEFA Champions League at half time to reigning champions Inter Milan. That is until Gareth Bale announced himself on the european stage and scored a hat-trick in the second half on his Champions League debut and gave travelling Spurs fans something to celebrate.

4. Ernst Wilimowski

This is by far the oldest hat-trick on this list with this occurring back in the 1938 World Cup. Wilimowski scored four goals against Brazil at just 21-years of age, however Poland still lost the game 6-5 after extra time for Brazil to advance to the Quarter Finals.

3. Ferenc Puskas

During his time at Real Madrid, Ferenc Puskas won three European Cups, but on this occasion they didn’t quite get over the line. The Hungarian forward scored a first half hat-trick to put the Spanish side 3-2 up before goals from Mario Coluna and Eusebio eventually won the game 5-3 for Benfica.

2. Ronaldo

It is widely debated that if Ronaldo didn’t retire so early due to injuries that he could be part of the debate involving the best players to ever play the sport. To score a hat-trick at Old Trafford is rare, however Ronaldo managed just that in the 2003 Champions League Quarter Final. Real Madrid lost the match on the night but still progressed in the tie 6-5 on aggregate.

1. Kylian Mbappe

To score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final is an extremely big feat as Kylian Mbappe became only the second player to ever do it following Geoff Hurst in 1966. However, unlike Hurst, Mbappe couldn’t get his nation over the line to retain the World Cup as they lost on penalties to Argentina in Qatar and Messi got his hands on the Jules Rimet trophy for the first time. Unbelievable!
