2025/26 EFL League Two MW7 Recap: Saturday's Matches in Review

Today's matches in League Two felt like the first emerging checkpoint of a season that is promised to excite.

At the top of the table, Gillingham came back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 with Bromley.

The hope amongst Gills fans is that this bright start is not deja vu of last season when they briefly led the division before enduring a 76-day winless run that torpedoed their campaign.

Seven games gone, patterns are emerging, and some of the biggest teams in the division are already starting to falter.

Swindon’s Statement Win at Barrow

It is strange to think that just 32 years ago, Swindon were playing in the highest division of English football. Their lone Premier League campaign in 1993/94 became infamous as they shipped 100 goals, and they’ve spent the decades since bouncing between Leagues One and Two. The Championship hasn’t seen them since the turn of the millennium.

However, there is now a slight sense of belief among their supporters that they will be promoted back to League One.

After seven games, they sit on 15 points in second place. They have only faced two losses so far, against Walsall and Barnet—matches where it took until extra time to defeat the Robins.

Salford building momentum

Owned by the iconic quintet of Manchester United’s class of '92—Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt—Salford have gained even more momentum as they set their sights on qualifying for League One for the first time in their history.

Today, they took another step in that direction as they defeated Tranmere 3-1, thanks to goals from Luke Garbutt, Cole Stockton and Ossama Ashley.

They now sit in 8th place, within touching distance of the play-off positions.

MK Dons Second Stumble

Up until gameweek five, it looked like smooth sailing for MK Dons. But for the second consecutive week, they have lost their matchup.

Today, they found themselves on the losing side to Grimbsy—a side that recently achieved history by beating Manchester United in the second round of the League Cup—and that has left the club in purgatory.

They now sit in 9th place, but with a tricky match-up against Chesterfield coming next weekend, it could be a third loss on the bounce for the Dons.

Cheltenham and Oldham get much-needed wins

Finally, after seven long weeks, both Cheltenham and Oldham have given their fans something to shout about: their first win.

Prior to this match, Cheltenham were languishing at the foot of the table with just one point. But a 1-0 win today against Accrington Stanley—a matchup that could be seen as a relegation six-pointer by the end of the season—lifted the Robins off bottom spot and, crucially, above Accrington themselves.

Oldham would also narrowly beat Cambridge 1-0, which leaves the Latics climbing up to 17th, while Cambridge sits in the middle on 12th.

Walsall Looking to Fix Last Season’s Woes

For 115 days, Walsall sat top of the 24/25 League Two table. They looked certain to gain automatic promotion, but after 13 gameweeks without a win, they slipped to fourth place and got beaten by AFC Wimbledon in the play-off final.

This year, the Saddlers have a sense of determination not to allow this to happen.

They sit in 3rd on 15 points after defeating Chesterfield 1-0.

Barent and Newport Sinking

Fans of both Barnet and Newport know that they could be in for a very long season.

Today, Newport suffered their fifth successive loss, which has left them in 22nd place. Only goal difference separates them and the drop zone.

Barnet suffered their third defeat of the season. They currently sit comfortably in 18th place, but a loss away to Crewe next week would see them drop even further.

Notts County Edge Fleetwood

After Notts County’s 1-0 win over Fleetwood, the two sides sit next to each other in 10th and 11th place.

The two sides have an identical record—three wins, two draws and two losses—and only goal difference separates the two sides.

The next few weeks will decide if the two sides are play-off material, or if they will stay in mid-table mediocrity.
