24 Hours In The Life Of A Newcasrtle Fan - What Happens In France Doesn't Stay In France

As the saying goes, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” Well, this time round it’s “What happens in Marseille certainly doesn't stay in Marseille.”

Newcastle travelled to the French city on Tuesday for their Champions League clash. The game started brilliantly for the Toon as Harvey Barnes slotted away his effort inside six minutes.

All seemed to unravel very quickly in the second half; Nick Pope’s brainless moment to rush out of his box to try to close down Aubameyang – he easily rounded the Englishman to put the ball into an empty net. He then made it 2-1 minutes later; Marseille then managed to hold on and take all three points.

However despite the result, the biggest story of the game wouldn’t be what happened on the pitch; it’d be what happened in the away end…

The Ultimate Away Day For The Ultimate Geezer

Following the conclusion of the game, we saw a few videos appear on X of one Newcastle fan who has had the away day for the ages.

To start the day while Newcastle fans were enjoying a few drinks, taking in the atmosphere our good friend has clearly had one, two, three, four… too many drinks and in true Geordie fashion has his top off and is having the time of his life pulling out all of his best dance moves with drink in hand.

Every time I watch it, I cannot stop laughing; he is genuinely in another world, having the time of his life. Everything a European away day should be.

Now moving on to some point before, during or after the game, a couple fans decided to film over the top of the toilets and what a sight it was.

The video has since been taken down but in the toilet cubicle was a woman and our Newcastle friend again. Her trousers were down, toilet roll for some reason was hanging out of her pants, and he had a very smug look on his face, and I’ll leave you all to let your imagination do the work as to what happened.

Now, as with 99% of European away days, the away fans get held behind after the match but Marseille is notorious for being incredibly hostile towards away fans. I remember Brighton fans being held back for multiple hours with people collapsing in the heat due to dehydration as they were waiting for so long.

Newcastle weren’t quite held back for as long but there was still frustration amongst the away fans; with riot police present, tempers eventually boiled over, with some Geordies having a go at the French police.

Later on a video was posted, only a three-second video of the clash between fans and police but all we needed was three seconds because clear as day, right in the mix of it, was the same fan from the dancing, from the cubicle, now starting on riot police. He is truly box office.

And that’s all the info we have on the guy; maybe he got up to some more madness but I guess we’ll never know. I don’t think a single person’s experience at an away game will ever be topped. From dancing with your top off to having fun in a toilet to fighting French riot police. As people have put it already, a true geezer. All that was missing to call it the perfect day would have been a Newcastle win; he has Pope to thank for that.

I would pay good money to be next to him when he finally sobers up and realises his antics have been made public for the world to see.

Someone Come Collect Their Dad

Moving on from him, we have another Newcastle fan; this one decided to do his best Tarzan impression by trying to climb the netting surrounding the away end.

As the Marseille fans were giving it to the Newcastle fans, this man decided it’d be smart to not just climb up and sit on the fencing like a couple are doing to the left of him but to leap onto the netting and start swinging around like a monkey.

He clearly didn’t think it through because as soon as he leaped onto the netting, he was very much struggling to maintain his grip. Luckily for him, a couple other fans helped bring him back onto the fencing; otherwise, a big fall down was on the cards.

It’s safe to say that even though they might not be as entertaining on the pitch, their fans certainly are and are a good reminder as to why Newcastle have one of, if not the best, fanbases in the country because I don’t think any other club can produce all that drama from just one game's worth in the stands.
