Arsenal's top 5 UCL Scorers
Arsenal spent seven years out of the Champions League and now find themselves a win away from their first semi final since 2009. But who have been Arsenal top scorers in the tournament?
5. Freddie Ljungberg
The Swede got 13 goals for Arsenal in just 64 appearances in the Champions league. He was at Arsenal from 1997-2008 and was a constant key part of the Arsenal team, as he started the traumatic night in Paris which saw Arsenal lose the Champions League Final to Barcelona. Ljungberg eventually joined Arsenal’s coaching staff under Unai Emery and was part of the transition to Mikel Arteta before leaving the club. Hopefully Freddie has given Mikel the luck to make it all the way to the final once again.
4. Cesc Fabregas
The former Arsenal captain also has 13 goals for Arsenal in the champions league. He managed to do it in only 55 appearances for the Gunners. Aside from reaching the final in 2006, the furthest the Spaniard got with Arsenal in the Champions League was the semi-finals in 2009, where Arsenal lost to Liverpool in extra-time at Anfield. Arsene Wenger will always wonder how things would’ve been different if Cesc never left in 2011 for Barcelona.
3. Theo Walcott
The Englishman got himself 15 goals in 59 champions league appearances for the Gunners. A truly underrated player at his best, Walcott scored Arsenal’s last champions League goal before this season, even if it may have been in the infamous 10-2 loss to Bayern Munich. His most iconic ucl moment will be his assist for adebayor at Anfield in 2008 where he ran the length of the pitch to counter from a Liverpool corner, showing off his blistering pace in the best way possible. Would Walcott at his best suit this current Arsenal side?
2. Robin Van Persie
The flying Dutchman scored 18 goals in 45 Champions League appearances for the North London side. Van Persie may not be looked on fondly by Arsenal fans but he will always be recognised as one of the most talented strikers of his generation. His best moment for Arsenal in the coveted European tournament came in the Gunners’ 2-1 win over Barcelona as Van Persie beat Victor Valdes at his near post to equalise before Andrey Arshavin’s iconic winner.
1. Thierry Henry
There was only ever going to be one man at the top of this list. The Frenchman got a whopping 35 goals in the tournament for Arsenal with the most important being a winner at the Bernabeu in 2006 which made the Gunners the first English team to beat Real Madrid away. Henry will always look back on the final that year wondering if he could’ve doubled Arsenal’s lead before Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti ruined Arsenal’s hopes of European success.
