Can English Teams Win All Three European Competitions?
With yet another chaotic week in Europe done, we take an in depth look at England's remaining clubs in European football, and anaslyse their chances of going all the way to win their respective UEFA competitions.
England currently sit top of the UEFA coefficient rankings meaning at the moment whoever finishes in fifth place in the Premier League will join the top four in partaking in Europe's biggest competition. They currently boast five out of seven teams remaining in Europe and with the Quarter-finals upcoming in April, stand a strong chance at securing at least eight teams in UEFA competitions next season.
Both Liverpool and Manchester City have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by European giants PSG and Real Madrid before the last eight stage so far. Manchester City were the last English team to lift a European trophy, however this season England have a promising chance to make history by having sides win all three competitions.
We start in the UEFA Champions League with Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. Although this may sound like a shock with The Gunners often on the receiving end of jokes, especially when it comes to Europe, you have to admit they do look the most inform side and the strongest England has left in Europe.
They currently reside in second place in the top-flight holding their position very comfortably. With the likes of Bukayo Saka expected to come back from injury in early April, he will certainly strenthen Arteta's side ahead of what will be a very strong test in their Quarter-final against Real Madrid.
Arsenal have had a very successful Champions League campaign so far, collecting an impressive 19 points and finishing third in the league phase; only bettered by Liverpool and Barcelona. Despite being given a tough league phase, Arsenal certainly raised some eyebrows, only losing to 1-0 to Inter and picking up some impressive results defeating PSG 2-0 and made light work of Sporting too winning by a 5-1 scoreline.
Although they have struggled to find the net in recent times in English football, Europe has been exception to that. They scored 16 times and were set up well at the back, conceding on only three occasions. The Gunners continued their formidable goalscoring record in Europe by thrashing PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Netherlands- they then confirmed their advancement to the last eight with a 2-2 draw at The Emirates last week- achieving a 9-3 aggregate win.
Before his injury, Saka was prolific for Arsenal in Europe, notching up four goals and two assists in just five games, with Kai Havertz joint with him for most goals for the London club. With Saka back just in time for the Quarter-final, Arsenal may just stand a chance at European glory, and they would become only the second London-based club to do so after Chelsea.
Next is surprise package, Aston Villa. European pedrigree is a term spoken about very fondly by football fans and Villa certainly has it. However, having last won the European Cup in 1982, they have failed to find much success around that in Europe. In fact, they have not qualified for any European competition since 1983.
Aston Villa were playing in the second-tier of English football just six years ago and recruitment has been a crucial factor in their rise in such a short time, so here is a brief timeline highlighting key arrivals and departures:
After selling Jack Grealish for £100m, they replaced him with a mixture of youth and experience in Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne. They then followed this over the next two summer windows, adding Jhon Duran, Morgan Rogers and Pau Torres- all players which proved to be vital in helping lift Aston Villa into the Champions League.
Behind every underdog story is mastermind behind it all. Unai Emery has made a name for himself, especially in Europe. The Spaniard is well known for taking sides through Europe and winning the lot. He won three consecutive editions in what was a historic run for Sevilla from 2014-2016. He also achieved success with Villarreal more recently in 2021.
With Emery as manager, Aston Villa definitely have a chance at lifting Europe's biggest prize. The Villains endured a remarkable run through the league phase, qualifying straight to the round of 16 alongside both Liverpool and Arsenal. They finished in eighth spot, accumulating 16 points from their eight group games. They defeated the likes of Bayern 1-0 and also finding a draw against Juventus, scoring 13 overall and conceding six along the way. They then breezed past Belgian side Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate to book a spot in the last eight. Everyone has contributed for goals, with the Villains having 11 different goal scorers across their 19 goals.
With PSG up next, Villa will be wanting to give this tie their all and they stand a very reasonable chance of making it through once more and suddenly they would be one step away from a chance at European glory in. PSG will however be very strong opposition, and high on confidence after beating Liverpool and completely outplaying them.
Now we move on to the first of two Europa League contenders; Ruben Amorim's Manchester United. It has been a very rocky season for Manchester club on and off the pitch and Europe is the only competition United have left to play anything for now. They face a steep uphill battle in the Premier League in 15th, 13 points off Europe however they overcame a tough Real Sociedad side at Old Trafford, and now look to be the main frontrunner for Europe's second-tier competition.
The Red Devils mirrored their underwhelming Premier League campaign with the start in the Europa League, by drawing 3/3. However since then they have not just remained unbeaten but won their remaining five matches to secure a bye to the Last 16. Scoring 16, with Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes scoring five and four respectively.
Manchester United have shown a lot of grit and determination to overcome a number of opponents, earning some impressive results such as their 3-3 draw in Porto which included an injury-time equaliser and if there's one word to describe Hojlund it would be clutch. Twice United were struggling against weaker opposition and twice he stepped when required, to score a brace to maintain their unbeaten record in the competition.

After earning a strong draw away in Spain, and with the game still tied on aggregate at half time in the second leg after two penalties were scored, three second-half goals were scored as club captain Fernandes stepped to score a hat-trick to seal their place in the last eight.
Manchester United play French side Lyon in the Quarter-finals and will stand a strong chance especially if Fernandes continues his fine form in the competition as they look to extend their unbeaten record and clinch Champions League football next season.
Our second English representative still standing in the Europa League is Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have, like United, struggled to achieve anything this season after a second leg collapse in the EFL Cup Semi-final against Liverpool and an FA Cup fourth round exit at the hands of Villa that fell within three days of each other.
Nonetheless, this has been happening season after season for Tottenham and it does make it you wonder if they will ever win another trophy. They have been made a laughing stock in English football and so no eyes are on Ange Postecoglou's side in winning the Europa League which may well just work in their favour.
The Lilywhites had been going about their business in Europe quietly, comfortably winning all of their first three matches. They went from looking strong to then going back to just being Spurs, as this was followed by two points in their next three matches and suddenly they had to win their last two to qualify automatically to the Round of 16.
Despite being plagued by injuries, Tottenham did win their last two games to advance in fourth place after the league phase. They were then tasked with defeating AZ Alkmaar who they beat 1-0 earlier on in the group phase. In the first leg in the Netherlands, it was a tough evening for Spurs has they could only manage one shot on target all game and had Lucas Bergvall own goal to give Postecoglou's men work to do in London.
Tottenham played much better on Thursday night, taking a 3-1 victory on the night with a 3-2 aggregate win too. They were able to convert their ball domination into more shots and it paid dividends as they booked a date with Eintracht Frankfurt in the last eight. The German side won this competition just three years ago so Spurs will be looking to silence the doubters and have a strong performance in North London so that they do not need to be chasing the game when the tie heads to West Germany the following week.

Chelsea are the last of the five English sides we look at today and perhaps the most likely to win their respective competition. Heavy favourites from the start and they have yet to be challenged in Europe. As for their football domestically, it has been very hot and cold. Chelsea had a stunning start to the season with everyone on fire, Chelsea fans were really pleased and the club was massively overperforming on their expectations and they found themselves second at before Christmas and only two points off Liverpool.
However, since then Chelsea fell back down to the ground and had a reality check. A poor two months between 22nd December and 22nd February saw Chelsea pick up two wins in the Premier League, get knocked out of the FA Cup and drop down to seventh in the Premier League.
Chelsea have seemingly got back on their feet, winning each of their last four which included victories home and away against FC Copenhagen. Enzo Maresca decided not to name starboy Cole Palmer in his UEFA Conference League squad, instead leaving the league phase of the competition to give valuable experience to the youth. This was highlighted when The Blues took as many as 11 academy players up to the Kazakhstan capital to face Astana.
Chelsea blitzed their group phase, winning all six of their matches, scoring a record-breaking 26 goals and conceding just five. This also included an 8-0 hammering of Armenian side Noah. It comes with no surprise that the Blues topped the league phase and have numerous players up for the top scorer, with Marc Guiu leading the way for the London outfit with six goals, with Christopher Nkunku just one goal behind.
After defeating Copenhagen in the previous round, they will next play against Polish side Legia Warsaw who will be aiming to make the final not too far from them in Krakow, Poland. Unlike other sides in this list, it is not a dream for Chelsea, but an expectation. They are heavy favourites for the title and should they win it in May, they will become the first club to have won all three major European honours.
