'CityPool' Returns - 10 Greatest Liverpool Vs Man City Matches In History (Ranked)

Few Premier League Rivals ever play with pure respect for the other. This rivalry over the last decade has been different to the rest. Most have an anger and hatred towards the other, these two however have been two sides at the very top, battling out in some of the most entertaining football matches we have ever seen. This was heightened due to the respect that Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp had for each other. This weekend however tells a different story. We have City travelling to Anfield to face off against Arne Slot and the reigning champions. This fixture always brings fireworks whoever is in charge, which is why we are taking a look at and ranking the 10 greatest Liverpool vs Man City fixtures in history!

10 - Liverpool 1-4 Manchester City

Premier League - February 2021

It is not often that a team of any calibre comes to Anfield and completely dismantles Liverpool. In 2021 however, this happened. Liverpool were the reigning champions yet they were having a season to forget after injury after injury started a long losing streak. City came to Anfield with a point to prove after Liverpool had a whopping 18 point lead the season prior, and boy did they do this. City punished a calamitous second half featuring errors from Alisson, ending the Reds’ long unbeaten home run. The result symbolised City’s march to the 2020/21 title and marked a genuine power swing in the rivalry.

9 - Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City

Premier League - October 2022

During a turbulent Liverpool season, this felt like a throwback. City arrived unbeaten and dominant, powered by Erling Haaland’s frightening scoring run, yet Anfield once again proved decisive. Liverpool defended with discipline, pressed with aggression, and struck through Mohamed Salah after a stunning Alisson assist. It was a match fuelled by emotion, from VAR controversy to Jurgen Klopp’s animated touchline presence, and served as a reminder that, even when off their best, Liverpool could still derail City’s momentum.

8 - Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool

Premier League - April 2022

This match felt less like a league fixture and more like a title decider... because it effectively was. City held a slender lead at the summit, while Liverpool chased perfection in pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple. Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected opener set the tone, but Liverpool responded twice through Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané. The quality was breathtaking, the tempo relentless, and the stakes enormous. Ultimately, the draw suited City, who would go on to win the league by a single point.

Highlights Here:

7 - Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City

Premier League - April 2014

Anfield was alive with belief. Liverpool, in the midst of a thrilling title charge under Brendan Rodgers, knew victory would place them firmly in control of the race. Philippe Coutinho pulled the strings, Raheem Sterling dazzled against his future club, and Martin Škrtel’s towering presence epitomised Liverpool’s intensity. City fought back late, but Liverpool found a way through a late Coutinho winner keeping their title dreams alive, even if the season would later end in heartbreak.

6 - Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City

Premier League - January 2018

If chaos had a soundtrack, it would sound like Anfield on this night. Manchester City arrived unbeaten, seemingly unstoppable, but Liverpool tore into them with fearless intensity. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mané ran riot as goals flew in from all angles. City rallied late, but the damage was done. Liverpool had ended City’s invincible run in one of the most exhilarating Premier League matches ever played. I remember watching this game like it was yesterday, Liverpool's press was so so strong, no one could handle it!

5 - Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City

UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals (First Leg) - April 2018

This was Liverpool at their most devastating. Against a City side widely regarded as Europe’s finest, Klopp’s men produced a ferocious first-half display that stunned Guardiola’s team into submission. Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Sadio Mané struck in a whirlwind 31 minutes as Anfield roared. It was a tactical masterclass and a symbolic moment, Liverpool announcing their return to the elite of European football. This was the second of three wins over Man City this season, Jurgen Klopp seemed to be the only side able of stopping Pep's side, and boy were these some cracking games.

4 - Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City

Premier League - November 2019

This was the rivalry at its absolute peak. Liverpool were chasing history, City were chasing them, and Anfield was deafening. Fabinho’s early strike set the tone, Mohamed Salah doubled the lead, and Sadio Mané sealed a defining win. City felt aggrieved by VAR decisions, with the famous Pep Guardiola meme created after multiple handball calls went against City, but Liverpool’s dominance was unmistakable. Eight points clear by full-time, this felt like the night Liverpool finally seized control of their destiny, and their long-awaited league title.

3 - Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City

FA Cup Semi Final - April 2022

When the two best teams in England met at Wembley, it felt like a final rather than a semi. Just 6 days after the 2-2 draw at the Etihad (ranked 8th), Liverpool, still dreaming of an unprecedented quadruple, tore City apart in a stunning first half. Ibrahima Konaté opened the scoring before Sadio Mané twice capitalised on rare City errors to send Liverpool in 3–0 up at the break. City fought back through Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva, but Liverpool held their nerve. The victory sent Klopp’s side into the FA Cup final and proved that, in knockout football, they could still outmatch their greatest rivals when it mattered most.

2 - Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City

Premier League - October 2021

When Liverpool and Manchester City met at Anfield, it was a reminder of just how far clear they were of the rest of the league. Fresh from a Champions League comeback days earlier, Liverpool matched City stride for stride in a game played at relentless intensity. Goals from Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah were cancelled out by Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne in a contest that swung violently from end to end.

A draw felt fair, but it felt like a missed opportunity for both. But the spectacle said everything. Two elite teams pushing each other to the limit, trading punches, and setting the tone for another gripping Premier League title race.

Highlights Here:

1 - Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool

Premier League - January 2019

Now this is as worthy of a number one spot as you will ever get. This in one of highest quality football matches that I have ever seen. Two titans going head to head in one of the most technical yet action packed fixtures that I have ever seen. This was the night the title race truly ignited. Liverpool arrived at the Etihad unbeaten and knowing victory would put them firmly in control, but City responded with a performance built on intensity and precision. Amazing goals and tight margins added to this amazing match, with this being a big decider in the title, as City beat out Liverpool by 1 point to win the League.
