Drop Off - Deciding Whether West Ham or Tottenham Will Be Relegated From the Premier League

As we approach the end of the season, we are yet to see who the third team to go down is. We have already seen Wolves and Burnley both see their time in the topflight of English football come to an end. Now we need to see who the third team to join them is and it looks to be down to two teams from the capital. So, who will it be West Ham or Tottenham Hotspur?

As it stands West Ham are currently in the relegation zone two points behind Spurs after their loss to Arsenal, however, Spurs failed to take the chance to extend this to a 4-point gap after dropping their one goal advantage to Leeds on Monday.

The Comparison

The first area we will look at is the form of both sides. After their loss on Sunday West Ham have a slightly worse form than Spurs with two wins, one draw and two losses. In comparison Spurs have managed to pick up two wins, two draws and only a single loss since Di Zerbi took the helm. This form has allowed them to push their way out of the bottom three and look towards safety for now.

We will now look at both sides remaining games. West Ham have Newcastle and Leeds left to play. Their form against Newcastle isn’t the worst having won two of their last five visits to Saint James’ Park and only losing a single game. To combine this with the fact they have only lost a single game when playing at home against Leeds, West Ham are in a good place to move forward and could pick up a possible four points.

Spurs on the other hand don’t have the nicest games with them facing Chelsea and Everton. These are two sides who like Spurs still have something to play for as they hunt for Europe. It is very well documented that Spurs have a poor record at Stamford Bridge only managing to win a single game there while losing thirteen. However, the same can’t be said for Everton who have managed just a single win against Spurs when playing away. So, it looks very likely that Spurs will pick up three points in the last two matches.

Therefore, based on the current form, the teams they will be facing and past head-to-head matches, Spurs will be safe by a single point. It looks like West Ham are more than likely to be the side that takes the drop and goes back down to the Championship for the first time in fourteen years.
