Alright, we may have been wrong in our prediction that Everton would go down last season. However, it must be said they didn’t make things easy for themselves, particularly in the first half of the season.
Lying a measly 16th by mid-January, things were getting a little bit too close for comfort at the bottom, and the Toffee’s board decided that Sean Dyche could take them no further. Arguably, their next move saved their season. After being replaced at the end of the 2023/24 season at West Ham, Scotsman David Moyes, who spent 11 years at Everton as manager between 2002 and 2013, returned to the club and completely flipped his sides fortunes around.
Immediately boosted by the return of a fan favourite, Everton started to win games regularly, and registered impressive victories over Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Brighton during the end of season run-in. Moreover, Moyes ensured they were iron-clad at the back - they would lose just four times after Moyes’ appointment as they finished an impressive 13th, 10 points from safety.
It was a stirring return, and to top it all off, it was Moyes, the fourth longest serving manager in the clubs history, that took charge as Everton played their final game at Goodison Park. A true full circle moment for the Toffees legend.

🥇✨ Everton manager David Moyes received an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to football! 🏴

He has managed 716 Premier League games and counting, only Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson have more. pic.twitter.com/3z7xmyIMLR
Heading into his 14th season as head coach of Everton, David Moyes’ presence in the dugout has only ever been beneficial to the Toffee’s. A lower mid-table side when Moyes first took charge in 2002, the Scot gradually built the squad into one that was challenging for European football season after season, not to mention causing some upsets amongst the Premier League elite.
As a result, Everton can’t help but have high expectations for his second stint at the club, and last season's drastic improvement following Dyche’s sacking only added fuel to the fire. With a new stadium set to be christened on matchday two, the Toffee’s seem to be entering a new era, and with Moyes at the helm, they look to be starting off on the right foot.
Importantly, he has wasted no time in sorting out the team to suit his style. The injury prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as well as ageing Ashley Young and inconsistent Abdoulaye Doucoure were among a host of players to see their contracts expire, and Moyes has already started to dip into the transfer market. Thierno Barry was brought in for £27 Million to make the striker spot his own, and Carlos Alcaraz, who impressed on loan from Flamengo last season, saw his efforts rewarded with a permanent deal.
Iliman Ndiaye
Though new big money signing Barry could reasonably have taken this spot, Iliman Ndiaye was Everton’s best player by a mile last season, and deserves more than his fair share of praise. Brought from Marseille at the start of last season, many looked at his mediocre final season in France and thought he was simply a waste of money. Afterall, four goals and three assists in 47 games isn't exactly groundbreaking.
Sit back and enjoy every Iliman Ndiaye goal from last season. 🤩 pic.twitter.com/IrDoWdXAeo
— Everton (@Everton) June 3, 2025
It is amazing how wrong you can be: right from the outset, Ndiaye was direct, threatening and full of intent, and immediatly cemented his spot on the left wing in Everton’s 4-2-3-1 set up. Scoring 11 goals across all competitions, with nine of them coming in the Premier League, his £15 million move suddenly turned into what looked like the bargain of the season.
And it is not just his skill on the ball that garnered attention. Ndiaye won the ball back 171 times across the 2024/25 season, the most of any forward in the division, illustrating how effective he is when employing a high press. This stat is made even more impressive when it is considered that he missed five games through injury! Now, with a season of Premier League football under his belt, the winger knows exactly what is expected of him, and with further reinforcements likely to arrive up top, his output is only likely to rise.
Although they are no longer considered amongst the European football contenders, and are instead lumped in with their other lower mid-table counter-parts, last season saw Everton finally extricate themselves from the vicious cycle of relegation battles they found themselves trapped in for three seasons prior.
The return of David Moyes’ familiar face to the dugout saw the Toffee’s undergo a rapid transformation - no longer wilting at the first sign of adversity, they suddenly made themselves very difficult to beat, causing problems for Arsenal, Liverpool and Brighton once the Scotsman took the helm. Now, with a full transfer window to mold the Everton squad into one that suits his style, Moyes has brought in an exciting array of talent, ranging from out-of-favour City winger Jack Grealish to the permanent signing of Carlos Alcaraz, who impressed on his loan stint last season.
With the talent arriving at the Bradley-Moore Dock Stadium this summer, Everton and Moyes are making a clear statement - they have no intent of lingering near the bottom of the table any longer. While their squad still needs improvement in a couple of positions as well as in squad depth, the Toffee’s shouldn’t encounter any problems this season.
