Football Park's Premier League Team of the Week - Matchday 2

26/08/24 15:08

There were goals galore in the Premier League this weekend as the season is now well and truly underway. There were a few shocks, some big moments and certainly a few standout players as all 20 teams played their second fixture. Here is Football Park’s Premier League Team of the Week from the second gameweek.

GK - Alex McCarthy (Southampton)

Despite being on the losing side, Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was in excellent form, making seven saves. The Saints ended up losing 1-0, but it could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for McCarthy, who isn’t even the club’s first choice keeper. Gavin Bazunu, who is the number one, is injured and won’t see action until the new year.

It looks as if the Saints are eyeing up a new goalkeeper, with Aaron Ramsdale and Justin Bijlow on the short list, but last weekend’s performance from McCarthy may have the Southampton hierarchy questioning whether or not he can fill the gap in between the posts.

RB - Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

A regular member of Premier League team of the weeks, Trent Alexander-Arnold has continued the form he had under Jurgen Klopp with Arne Slot as Liverpool beat Brentford 2-0 at home. Trent didn’t pick up any goal contributions, but he did a lot to help Liverpool’s attack on a number of occasions.

The Reds had a pass accuracy of 92%, their highest since records began in 2004 and one of their most creative players was Trent. He carried the ball into the attacking third well and sprayed passes in all directions. There was talk of him leaving in the summer, but I think we will see some of his best football under Slot. The two just go together so well.

CBs - Max Kilman (West Ham) and Cristian Romero (Spurs)

West Ham travelled to Crystal Palace for their first away game this season and managed to keep a clean sheet against the Eagles. New signing Max Kilman started his second game in a row for the Hammers and managed to register an assist with a pass through to Jarrod Bowen. He made a number of good long balls over the top of Palace’s back line and looked a good fit for West Ham.

Cristian Romero marked his 100th Spurs game with a goal in what was a game to remember at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs managed to win 4-0 against Everton and were dominant throughout. Romero headed in a corner in the second half to help Tottenham on their way to victory, but was also solid defensively for the full 90 minutes. As a little bonus, he didn’t even get booked either.

LB - Antonee Robinson (Fulham)

Fulham earned their first win of the season against Leicester this weekend. The Cottagers won 2-1 in what ended up being a quite comfortable affair. Antonee Robinson has long been a standout player for the London club, and once again he showed his worth in both a defensive and offensive manner.

He managed to get the assist for Alex Iwobi’s winner, but more than that, he contributed to the attack at every given opportunity with crosses finding Rodrigo Muniz on a number of occasions. He was also solid defensively, with Leicester’s only goal coming from a corner.

CDMs - Thomas Partey (Arsenal) and Yves Bissouma (Spurs)

Two goal scoring defensive midfielders make the team of the week, with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Spurs’ Yves Bissouma both having excellent games this weekend. Partey scored the Gunners’ second against Aston Villa after good work from Bukayo Saka. He generally had a pretty impressive game and his solidity in midfield allowed Declan Rice to get forward a bit more, something that he is very good at.

Bissouma’s performance was a lot simpler, as Everton rarely laid a glove on Spurs, but his goal was much more impressive. The powerful strike found the top corner and opened the floodgates for Spurs who went on to win 4-0. After missing the first game through a club suspension, Spurs fans will be glad to see him back.

RW - Noni Madueke (Chelsea)

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke will have to have about 50 bodyguards if he ever wanted to show his face in Wolverhampton again after this weekend. Before the game, he accidentally posted comments about the city on his public instagram rather than his private account. The comments weren’t exactly complimentary.

He then went on to have one of the best games of his career, scoring a hattrick in Chelsea’s 6-2 win. There is a lot of competition for places in the Chelsea squad, so scoring a lot is important for attackers if they want to remain in the team. Madueke has certainly laid a claim on the right-wing spot, and has definitely earned his place in this XI.

CAM - Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Keeping it blue for our next inclusion, Cole Palmer was well and truly back to his best against Wolves as he registered a goal and three assists. His excellent chip in the first half restored his side’s lead after Wolves equalised, and then he managed to assist all of Madueke’s goals too.

Even though the Chelsea squad is massive, there is no doubt that Palmer starts, either as a right winger or as an attacking midfielder. He is clearly one of the best young talents in world football, and if Chelsea play it right, they could end this season in the top 4.

LW - Son Heung-Min (Spurs)

The third inclusion on this list from Tottenham, Son Heung-Min led the line against Everton brilliantly in the absence of Dominic Solanke. He managed two goals in the game, his first brace in nearly a year. Last season his goal scoring went under the radar a little bit, but this year he looks to captain his side back into the Champions League.

Both of his goals were well taken, but he may have been on the end of ‘assist of the season’ from Micky van de Ven, who picked the ball up in his own 18 yard box before driving all the way to Everton’s 18 yard box. The Dutchman then passed it off to Son who found the back of the net.

ST - Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Another week, another Erling Haaland hattrick. His three goals against Ipswich this weekend marks his 10th hattrick for Manchester City in his 101st appearance for the club. Each of his goals were expertly finished, one from the spot, one from a tight angle, and one from the edge of the box.

Pep Guardiola has said that not playing in the Euros this summer has done him a world of good, as he is fresh off a period of rest and ready to fire on all cylinders. He has certainly begun the season doing that, with four goals in two games, and looks set to retain the Golden Boot for the third year running.
