A little over five years ago, Wycombe Wanderers were a surprise inclusion in the 2020/21 Championship line-up. A marauding gang of hipsters led by Adebayo Akinfenwa and Uche Ikpeazu in attack, Joe Jacobson at the back, and Gareth Ainsworth on the touchline.

Half a decade later, and the thrill of their first and only season at the heights of the EFL is a distant memory. Since those days, a run of four top ten finishes in League One has led to nothing but disappointment, from late-season collapses to play-off failures.

The Chairboys' faithful had begun to question whether they’d ever escape this league again.

A Start for Sore Eyes

After a strong summer window, dipping into both native and European transfer markets, the hope that flooded Adams Park in the pre-season was quickly extinguished by the club's winless start.

As the calendar flipped over to September, Wycombe sat in the relegation zone with two points from six games, and Mike Dodds' managerial position looked under serious threat. A few weeks later, the 39-year-old was relieved from his duties, and in came three-time League One manager of the month Michael Duff.

Eleven Unbeaten

The Chairboys have witnessed just a single loss since Duff took over, in a run of impeccable form that has lifted them to 10th, four points outside of the play-offs. During that time, Wycombe have picked up results away at Wigan Athletic and Blackpool. However, the roots of their success stem from unbelievable home form.

Wycombe have played at home in League One six times under Duff, picking up 16 points from a possible 18. This run included three goal margin victories over Leyton Orient and Huddersfield Town, who both finished in the top half of the table last campaign.

The biggest statement of all occurred last Saturday, as Wycombe beat Lincoln City 3-2 thanks to an 88th-minute Jack Grimmer winner. Lincoln could’ve risen to the summit of the standings had they won at the weekend, a strong signifier that this Chairboys team can now compete with others pushing for promotion.

The Michael Duff Effect

The first 26 years of Duff’s professional football career were spent at two clubs, Cheltenham Town and Burnley. The manager himself summarised it perfectly during his first interview at Wycombe, claiming that he wanted to “build something” without the need to deliver results immediately. A pressure he found bestowed upon him at Swansea City and Huddersfield Town.

The Northern Irishman’s firing at the Terriers earlier this year was deemed unfair by many, as he departed East Yorkshire with the club sitting in seventh. Duff is no stranger to an unbeaten run in this league; last season, his Huddersfield Town side went 16 games unbeaten between October and January. He also went on a 12-game unbeaten run with Barnsley in the 2022/23 season.

Duff instils hard work, physicality and pace into the squads he takes charge of. At Wycombe, he has favoured the popular 4-2-3-1 formation, featuring a double pivot of Luke Leahy and Ewan Henderson, and a fluid, intertwining attacking consisting of Sam Bell, Fred Onyedima, Cauley Woodrow, and Alex Lowry.

Having ventured to the heights of the Premier League with Luton Town, Fred Onyedima’s return to Wycombe, for the fourth time, was poetic. Whilst he did not make waves at Adams Park last season, the Lagos-born winger has been on fire this season, scoring five and assisting three in all competitions. Onyedima’s performances on the pitch have very much contributed to that feel-good factor at Wycombe, as their hero is finally delivering once again.

On the opposing flank is Sam Bell, on loan from Bristol City. The winger already has Championship experience with the Robins and is also showing his pedigree with six goals in a blue shirt, including a brace against Lincoln last time out.

Scottish blood finds itself in all areas of this team, as Wycombe’s starting full-back pairing, Jack Grimmer and Daniel Harvie, are both products of Aberdeen’s academy. Fellow first-teamers Alex Lowry and Ewan Henderson have also played for Rangers and Celtic, respectively.

How High Can They Climb?

Wycombe Wanderers can benefit from the extremely open nature of the League One table this year, as six points separate them from Cardiff City at the top despite being 10 positions apart on paper.

An upcoming away clash with Rotherham United is on the horizon, a pivotal tie against the team that sits directly behind them on the same number of points. If the Chair Boys are to defeat the Millers, then a pleasant run of fixtures against Northampton, Exeter, and Plymouth awaits, all of whom lie in the bottom eight as we speak.

Wycombe are a humble club; they average close to 5,000 fans per game and keep themselves to themselves in the depths of Buckinghamshire. However, right now, all the noise is coming from the Adams Park camp, and Duff’s men show no sign of slowing down.
