Kane I Kick It?

In an interview with reporters at St George’s Park on Wednesday, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane raised the possibility of ending his career in Major League Soccer, whilst also starting up a career in the National Football League as a kicker.

The England captain did still note that a contract extension with the Bundesliga champions is “fairly close”, and that it “won’t be too long” until an announcement is made. But whilst Kane is looking forward in his career, he is not ruling out a change of scenery—or even a change of sport.

The forward has been a long-time admirer of golf. Two years ago, he even played with President of the United States Donald Trump.

Kane is a member at Wentworth—a private golf course just outside London that recently saw JJ Spaun lift the BMW PGA Championship—and plays off a handicap of two. Despite his innate ability with a club, he knows how difficult it would be to turn professional.

His other passion in sport lies with American football. For years, he has toyed with the idea of becoming a specialist kicker, and on Wednesday he revealed that he wants to take this passion further.

“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” Kane told reporters at St George’s Park. “It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way.”

He went on to say that there have been no conversations with any NFL clubs, and whilst he is still at the top of his game in football, there would be no chance of a switch.

“If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had,” he said. But Kane went on to raise another possibility: dual-wielding sports.

“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons,” he said. “But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here.”

He is also well aware of the football-turned-NFL star Brandon Aubrey. The footballer-turned-NFL star began his career at Toronto FC, having been selected 21st in the first round of the draft, but after just a year with the Canadian-based side, he was transferred to Bethlehem Steel, where he managed just one season before making the switch to American football.

“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique,” Kane said. “If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than to any other sport. But as I know, with all elite sports, when you watch it on TV, people make it look easy, and you think it is possible, but that is not always the case.

“If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before.”

Since making the switch, Aubrey has become one of the stars of America’s most beloved sport. In his first season, he was a first-team All-Pro, whilst in his second and third he made the second team. In 2023, he claimed the NFL scoring leader trophy, and throughout his short career thus far, he holds 12 NFL records, including the most 60+ yard field goals in a career, with seven.
