How Can Liverpool Progress Under Arne Slot Next Season?

After securing their 20th topflight title, going level with Manchester United- the Merseyside Reds are now considered the best club in the history of English football. They managed this after a 5-1 drubbing of Tottenham. They were once considered with a genuine yet ambitious chance of a quadruple, however they were knocked out in Round 4 of the FA Cup in remarkable fashion to Plymouth. They also were eliminated on penalties by PSG in the Champions League before being beaten by Newcastle in the EFL Cup.

So, next up for Arne Slot is to take over the rest of England and even the world next season. They undoubtedly have one of the best squads in the world, and in this article, we will be taking you through how Liverpool might look to progress next under the Dutchman.

Contract Renewals

In recent weeks, Reds fans were given the amazing news that Mohammed Salah and Captain Virgil van Dijk would both stay on at Anfield, extending their stays until the summer of 2027. Both players have had very successful stays in Liverpool, winning a UEFA Champions League title and two Premier League titles.

Mo Salah extending his contract was amazing at Anfield and that fourth goal last weekend meant so much to both parties as Salah has enjoyed an incredible career there. He has scored 28 goals in this campaign, leading the golden boot race by six to Alexander Isak’s 22. He also has 18 assists which is just two off the record with four games still to play, while he can also break the record for most goal contributions in a Premier League season, which stands at 47. Salah has already broken many Premier League records and will look to earn a record-joining fourth golden boot this campaign.

Virgil van Dijk has also won the Champions League and now two Premier Leagues with the Reds. As for personal accolades, he has won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2018-19 as well as being named in the PFA Team of the Year in three of four seasons between 2018 and 2022.

All of these accolades which each of these players have earned through Liverpool show that although they are both now in their 30’s, they also both still have what it takes to play at the top level and that they can bring even more success to Anfield in their next two seasons.

Potential Summer Business

We start at the defence, and two players Liverpool seem keen to sign are Milos Kerkez or Jorrel Hato. The Reds will be looking for someone to compete with Andrew Robertson and fill in for him, easing his workload. Hato would come from Ajax, and he is a defender who is admired a lot by Liverpool, but Kerkez may be more likely to make the move, also being friends with fellow Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai. Purchasing either would however, mean time might be up for the Greek Kostas Tsimikas.

Liverpool are also considering a double swoop of Bournemouth defensive talents, with Dean Huijsen high up on their wish list. Although Chelsea are considered the frontrunners for the Spaniard’s signature, signing him could also enable back up for Connor Bradley (more on this later), since it would allow Jarell Quansah or Joe Gomez to drift across to cover.

Next, we move up to the midfield briefly, as the entire midfield for Liverpool is looking likely to stick. The only question mark is that of Harvey Elliot who is unsure if his future lies at the club. Despite performing well off the bench, he has been limited 189 minutes this season- all off the bench. Arne Slot believes everyone in his midfield is a very valuable player- whether that be starter or squad player, their midfield is looking very strong and well-rounded.

Lastly, in the attack, and Liverpool are in the market for a new number nine. Darwin Nunez is loved by all Liverpool fans but there is no hiding that he has never been able to show his full potential at Anfield, with this season a prime example of seven goals in 43 games in all competitions, and his departure was hinted at by interest from Saudi clubs in January.

Isak is widely admired by Liverpool however, a deal for the Swedish forward will be very difficult to pull off, with an expected £150 million price tag put upon him. Other options for the Reds include Bundesliga strikers Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt. Sesko has interest from Arsenal too however, both are being considered.

There are also questions surrounding Federico Chiesa’s future at the club after the Italian has struggled to make his mark since moving for £10 million in the summer. It was always going to difficult to compete with Salah on the right side, but injuries certainly have not helped him. He is looking likely to head back to Italy this summer although nothing is concrete yet.

Future Of Young Superstars

Giorgi Mamardashvili will arrive at Anfield from Valencia this summer, and will look to deputise Brazilian number one, Alisson. This does, however, suggest that Irish keeper Caoimhin Kelleher will depart Kirkby- although there was no hiding his aspirations to become a number one goalkeeper. He has always been excellent when filling in for Alisson and is ever popular by fans.

Quansah has had interest from a number of clubs, however, Liverpool are not looking to sell the 22-year-old. With Trent Alexander-Arnold looking doomed to exit Anfield this summer for a move to Real Madrid, it will leave big boots to fill. Academy graduate Conor Bradley looks to be that man however, who will look to play a much bigger role next season.

Elliott is also someone who will potentially exit this summer, although he would like to stay in Kirkby. Young midfielder who was on loan this season, Stefan Bajcetic, will be assessed in pre-season, after finding success in the second half of the season at Las Palmas, with the 20-year-old finding more regular game time.

Another academy graduate Tyler Morton is expected to leave Anfield this summer after recovering from shoulder surgery. Liverpool are expected to receive a lot of interest for 19-year-old Ben Doak, who impressed at Middlesbrough before being struck by injury. A fee of in the region of £30 million plus is expected in order for Liverpool to budge.
