Sadio Mane has long been recognised as a global star on the footballing stage. Blessed with rapid pace, superb touch and feel, and an eye for goal, the Senegalese international became part of a lethal front three trio alongside Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, which has since become recognised as one of the best front threes in Premier League history.

However, Mane sparked controversy in January 2024 when, at the age of 31, he married 18-year-old Aisha Tamba in an arranged marriage set up by Aisha’s father.

Many people sat and took exception to the 12 year age gap between the couple, and became more outraged when it became known that the teenager “was long intended for the footballer since her early teenage years.”

It is important to note that the legal age of consent in Senegal is 16, meaning the marriage between Mane and Tamba is entirely legal and fair in the country of Senegal. England also has a consent age of 16, but arranged marriages are not common in England, whereas in Senegal, they are considered very much the norm.

It appears that Aisha has taken to her new life alongside the football star well. After living for many years with as many as 30 relatives in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, the move to Saudi Arabia, where Mane play’s at Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo would have brought welcome respite.

Speaking to the media in the wake of the marriage, Aisha did much to endear herself to the press, saying: “I am a very down to earth person - that is how I was raised, and I won’t let fame and money change me. Nothing will be different because of this marriage. I am very honoured to be Mrs Mane.”
