Is Montpellier's 16-Year Stay in Ligue 1 Over?
Montpellier HSC are in serious trouble both on and off the pitch. Just over a decade since their fairytale Ligue 1 title triumph, La Paillade find themselves staring relegation in the face, rock bottom with just 11 games to save their season.
A disastrous run of form has seen them lose four consecutive matches, leaving them seven points adrift of safety. But their struggles run far deeper than results alone. Financial instability has plagued the club, exacerbated by the ongoing TV rights crisis that has hit many French sides hard.
Unlike some of their rivals, Montpellier have also failed to generate significant funds through player sales. Since Elye Wahi’s departure two summers ago, the club has lacked the kind of bankable assets that could ease their financial woes.
In a desperate bid to secure the club’s future, president Laurent Nicollin is now actively seeking investment. A ten-page proposal has been circulated to major French investment banks, with Nicollin describing the move as “throwing a hook into the sea.” While he insists he is not looking to sell the club outright, the harsh reality is that he may have to relinquish majority control.
“We need to make our fall less painful at the end of the year,” Nicollin admitted, acknowledging the severity of the situation. Whether they survive or suffer relegation, Montpellier will be forced to sell players this summer as they attempt to rebuild.
The last time Montpellier played in the second division, they finished in second place and were promoted largely due to the goals scored by Victor Montano, a Colombian striker who netted 15 goals across the campaign, finishing as the league’s second highest goal scorer.
With just four wins all season, 16 defeats, and a crucial fixture against Rennes up next, time is running out for Montpellier. As they mark their 50th season in French football, the question remains—can they find a way to extend their top-flight stay, or is their Ligue 1 journey coming to an end?
