Could Barcola At Liverpool Mean The Start Of A New Iconic Attack?

After weeks of negotiations, Liverpool got their man when a fee of around £110 million was agreed for PSG winger Bradley Barcola to join the Merseyside club this summer after helping the Parisian side win back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles.

However, despite being at the place to be more than any other in European football right now, the arrival of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw Barcola’s minutes at the Parc des Princes reduce slightly. Despite that, the winger still showed his ability wirh 11 goals in Ligue 1, as well as two goals and four assists in the UEFA Champions League.

Wanting to become more of a guaranteed starting player, Barcola sought a move to Anfield when aware of Liverpool’s interest, and after the two clubs finally agreed a fee and the move was completed Barcola made his debut for the Reds away at Ipswich Town, coming off the bench in the latter stages as Andoni Iraola’s team secured a 0-2 win.

Where Will Barcola Fit In Liverpool's Attack?

Barcola joins a squad already containing supreme attacking talent in abundance. With Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz also costing north of £100 million in the Liveroool forward line.

With so much attacking talent, the question may be where the France international fits in at Anfield?

Primarily of course, Barcola plays as a left winger and is expected to mainly fit that position, especially with striker Hugo Ekitike out injured with a long-term achillies injury which is expected to keep the forward out of action until January 2027.

It's yet to see whether Iraola will attempt to play a system which includes both Isak and Ekitike starting together, but the latter's absence has seen Isak begin the season as a lone striker, with Cody Gakpo on the left-wing and Victor Munoz or Rio Ngumoha starting on the right flank.

For much of the latter stages of the window, it looked like Gakpo would be departing Anfield with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City reportedly heavily interested in the Dutch forward. However, Gakpo ventually stayed at Liverpool and has enjoyed a strong start to the season, especially in the last match at Portman Road which saw Gakpo assist both of Isak's two goals, creating the most chances of any player in the match and completing the joint-most dribbles.

A player in that kind of form is hard to leave out, but that brings the question of where Liverpool's new marquee attacking signing fits in?

Of course, Barcola could be moved across the the right hand-side of the Reds attack at right-wing, which has become a posiiton of need following the departure of club legend Mohamed Salah in the summer, however the Frenchman has only played 37 times in his career on the right flank, compared to 114 times on his preferred left side.

A player of Barcola's quality will still be more than capable of producing on the right despite it not being as natural to him on the left, with both Gakpo and Isak also capable of interchaning postions throughout ht efront line Liverpool's front three could become fluid and flexible.

Gakpo, Isak and Barcola is an attack that offers just about everything that a manager such as Iraola would like in a forward line. All three players are fast, agile, swift and silky running with the ball and have an eye for goal, making this new Liverpool potinetisally as dangerous in the final third as the days of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah under Jurgen Klopp.

With Ekitike to come back too, one of English football's brightest teenagers coming through in Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirz and new signing Victor Munoz, the Reds undoubtly have one of the most frigtening batch of forwards across Europe. But the job for Iraola and the Liverpool coaching staff now is fitting them all together, and finding the best combination possible.

Barcola's impact at Liverpool so far has of course been short, with the Frenchman coming off the bench for his debut midway through the second half at Portmon Road, but his impact and quality have already been felt, with the 24 year-old recording the highest top speed sprint of any player across the Premier League so far in the opening stages of the campagin, recording a sprint of 35.9km/h versus Ipswich.

Quality and pace in attack was something Liverpool sorely lacked last season, with Reds supporters often frustatred at the lack of invention and inovation going forwards, with Salah, Gakpo and Isak underperforming, which contributed to an often unexciting and stale style of football Arne Slot which contributed to the Dutchman's sacking at Anfield, just a year on from lifting the Premier League title at the club in his first season in English football after arriving from Feyenoord.

There is no doubt Barcola will help bring the injection Liverpool's forward line was missing last season. And whilst it's too early too judge whether Iraola can help Liverpool firmly challenge at the top of the table in his first season, Liverpool fans have strong reason for optimism with Barcola now added to their already impressive attacking ranks.
