What began as a dream start to life in the dugout for former England international Jack Wilshere has quickly unravelled.
Appointed manager of League One side Luton Town F.C. on October 13, 2025, the early signs were encouraging. The Hatters won two of Wilshere’s first three matches in permanent charge, injecting a sense of optimism around Kenilworth Road.
It followed a brief two-game stint at Norwich City, where Wilshere had his first taste of managerial experience.
But the initial bounce has given way to some turbulence, and when Luton faced Burton Albion yesterday, it became ugly.
The match itself was a torrid affair, with both sides fighting for dominance over the middle of the pitch.
Bermudian Nahki Wells fired Luton in front after 13 minutes, and as the clock ran down, it looked like Luton would win their first match in three games, easing some of the pressure on Wilshire.
But as the clock read 92 minutes, the Hatters failed to clear the lines and Udoka Godwin-Malife’s tantalising cross found Fabio Tavares at the back post, who made no mistake in heading home to the joy of the travelling Burton Albion fans.

This draw means that Luton have picked up just 11 points from their 10 games played so far in 2026 and have dropped from 7th to 10th in the table.
As the Luton Town players trudged off the pitch and down the tunnel at Kenilworth Road, they were met by a chorus of boos that reverberated around the ground
Wilshere followed a few steps behind. Then he stopped. He turned, took a couple of steps toward the fans who were hurling abuse, and fixed the supporters with a stare that carried more defiance than diplomacy.
Before it could get ugly, the Luton manager was ushered away by security and his own players.

Following the match, Wilshere had this to say about the abuse he, and the rest of the Luton players, dealt with:
“First of all, I understand their frustrations, I do. I've said that a lot, but right now we need them. It's not for a lack of the players trying; they're giving everything every single day. We work really, really hard to try and win games, to try and make supporters happy.
“I think you can see that the players are really lacking belief; they're lacking confidence. It's difficult then when in the first minute there's booing, but right now, everyone needs to be together; everyone needs to stick together.
“We have no right just to turn up and win games and expect that we can just do that, as we can't; you can clearly see that at the moment that is not the case.
“I didn't think we started that well, but we had intent; we wanted to play a certain way, and then we had a little bit of rhythm. We scored, and then we tried to hold on to the lead, and that for me tells me that the players are lacking in confidence, lacking in belief.”
“We have to really work for every single thing.”

Luton will next face an in-form Plymouth Argyle in the quarter-finals of the EFL Trophy, before travelling to bottom-of-the-table Port Vale, as the Hatters search for their first away points of the 2026 calendar year.
