Kalvin Phillips vs West Ham Fans | EXPLAINED

01/04/24 18:11

On the weekend, West Ham travelled to St James’ Park to take on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle in the early kickoff.

To everyone’s surprise West Ham led 3-1 with 70 minutes on the clock. With the Hammers set to come away with a great away win, substitute Kalvin Phillips found himself in the firing line by his fans yet again.

The midfielder gave Newcastle a way back in the game, as he was judged to have fouled Gordon in the box, with Alexander Isak scoring from the resulting penalty.

The Magpies went on to win 4-3 in an impressive comeback, while West Ham fans all looked at Kalvin Phillips as his substitution marked the turning point in the game.

Kalvin Phillips

The Manchester City loanee has recently found blame at his door by West Ham fans as it hasn’t exactly worked out for him in Claret and Blue.

On his debut he was caught in possession and mistakenly gave the ball to Dominic Solanke who scored Bournemouth an early opener at the London Stadium in a disappointing 1-1 draw for the Hammers.

His second match for Moyes’ side was no improvement as he was once again responsible for the ball going in the West Ham net in a 3-0 loss to Manchester United.

In similar fashion to his first mistake, Phillips received a pass, unaware of his surroundings, before losing the ball under pressure and 8 seconds later Alejandro Garnacho had put the ball past Areola.

Not too long after that Phillips got himself sent off after receiving two yellows in a 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Now the finger pointing has reached a critical point as after Saturday’s loss at Newcastle, when getting onto the West Ham Coach, Phillips was met with abuse from fans.

Instead of ignoring them and simply getting on, Phillips showed his middle finger towards the set of West Ham fans.

The video has been seen by many, with West Ham fans showing varying opinions. Some have said that the loan should be terminated, while others are showing sympathy towards the player, as the abuse has not helped him adjust.

David Moyes came out in his press conference before West Ham’s match against Tottenham defending Kalvin Phillips as he said:

“What he needs is support, he needs support behind him” “We need all our support to all our players, whoever it is”

Moyes' words of support may be worth it as rumours have since come out that Man City are looking to sell Phillips in the summer and West Ham may look to bring Phillips in on a permanent deal.

If Phillips does stay at the London Stadium, you would hope the fans are a lot more welcoming when the summer comes around.
