Lack of Anfield activity- Cause for concern or cause for optimism?
The summer months as a football fan are typically filled with a burning desire for a hive of transfer activity at their club, creating a fantasy football team, and eagerly anticipating the first round of fixtures in mid August. For many, the first few days of this month bring about a ‘so close yet so far’ feel to a season which is just weeks away.
On the red half of Merseyside, things have been uncharacteristically quiet. Despite the fanfare surrounding the appointment of Arne Slot, Liverpool are the only club within the so called ‘Top 5 Leagues’ to not bring in a new face this summer. While many will have faith in the squad assembled so brilliantly by Jurgen Klopp, even the most ardent Kopite will be concerned that the new man has been unable to bring in fresh talent. The idea after all, is when a new man comes to the fore, they bring with them new idea, and usually, new recruits.
Liverpool are the only Premier League side yet to spend money on incomings in this transfer window...

Here's what Arne Slot had to say about any potential new signings at Anfield this summer 💬 pic.twitter.com/4LhLvBRAAr
The Arne Slot brand of football draws many similarities to that of Jurgen Klopp. Fast, free flowing football, of which, the current Liverpool team is perfectly capable of producing. However, Slot is now learning that this is a club that does things slightly differently to that of its Premier League rivals in an era dominated by eye watering transfer fees.
A common misconception from envious supporters of other clubs is that Liverpool ‘spend loads of money’. On the face of it, £75 million on Virgil Van Dijk, as well as a similar fee for Alison Becker render this statement true. However, to facilitate these purchases, Phillipe Coutinho was sold to Barcelona, a transfer figure in excess of £140 million. The owners, FSG, have always leaned towards a more cautious approach. While Chelsea are willing to spend upwards of £80million like pocket money, the Americans prefer to have tighter purse strings. This has never been more evident than now, where fans of many clubs are wondering how Liverpool will fare if their new manager isn’t equipped with a single new player.
The only player mentioned has been Anthony Gordon. Liverpool have been admirers for a good while now, and while talks of a deal which included Joe Gomez heading to the north east stalled, there is suggestion that Gordon could still be on his way back to his hometown.

On the face of it, many would argue that Liverpool could well benefit from bringing in a few new players. Gone are the days where Van Dijk and Salah had their peak days ahead of them. Both have been impressive, but both emphasise that this is an ageing squad. That being said, the emergence of the superb Harvey Elliot (21) and the mature performances from Jarrell Quansah last season, give reason to be optimistic for the future.
One thing is for certain, with just two weeks until the curtain raiser of the Premier League, Liverpool supporters will be hoping to see some new arrivals in the coming fortnight.
