The Rise of Lewis Hall

At just 20 years old, Lewis Hall, wearing number 20 for Newcastle, has already carved out an impressive footballing journey. Starting out as a midfielder during his youth career at Binfield up until 2012, the talented player has seamlessly transitioned through positions, clubs, and now to the England senior national team. Representing England at every level from the Under-15s, Hall looks to have a promising future ahead thanks to his determination.

Rising through the Chelsea ranks

Hall’s footballing journey began when he joined Chelsea’s youth system at just eight years old. He progressed through the ranks, signing his first scholarship with the club in the summer of 2021. A regular standout at both Under-18 and Under-23 levels, Hall was named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season, joining an esteemed list of past winners, including Dominic Solanke, Mason Mount, and Reece James.

Known for his versatility, Hall has showcased his adaptability by excelling in multiple roles in the 2022/23 season, playing as a winger for Chelsea’s Under-18 side, a centre-back for the development squad, and as a left-back for the men’s team, underlining his value as a multi-dimensional talent.

Chelsea first team journey

Hall’s first taste of senior football came in December 2021 when he was called up to Chelsea’s squad for an EFL Cup quarter-final against Brentford, though he remained an unused substitute. Just weeks later, on January 8, 2022, Hall made his professional debut during an FA Cup third-round win over Chesterfield, where he made an immediate impact by assisting the third goal.

His Premier League debut followed on November 12, 2022, in a narrow 1–0 defeat to Newcastle United, marking the beginning of his top-flight career. Hall then went on to make nine first-team appearances between 2022 and 2024. After impressing with his performances, Hall was loaned to Newcastle for the 2023/24 season.

Newcastle and England

Lewis Hall’s move to Newcastle United has been nothing short of transformative. Initially joining on a season-long loan on August 22, 2023, with an obligation to buy for £28 million plus £7 million in add-ons, Hall quickly made his mark. He debuted in style during Newcastle’s historic 8–0 victory over Sheffield United on September 24 and netted his first goal for the club in a 3–0 EFL Cup win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on November 1. His first Premier League goal followed on May 15, 2024, also against Manchester United, though in a hard-fought 3–2 loss. By July 1, 2024, Newcastle activated the purchase clause, securing Hall on a permanent deal.

Since then, Hall has become Newcastle’s first-choice left-back, solidifying his place in the team during an unprecedented injury crisis. Known for his composure and defensive skill, Hall has featured in all 10 of Newcastle’s Premier League fixtures this season. His standout performances include a strong showing against Arsenal, where he effectively managed the threat of Bukayo Saka.

Data backs up his impressive form. Hall ranks in the 99th percentile among Premier League players for blocks (2.0 per 90 minutes) and in the 94th for aerial duels won (1.7 per 90). His durability is another asset; he’s played 90 minutes in five of his last seven starts, cementing his role as a trusted and consistent presence in the squad.

Thanks to his impressive stats, Hall’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed at the international level. He earned his first England senior call-up recently for matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland under interim coach Lee Carsley. With England seeking solutions for the left-back position, Hall had a golden opportunity to make his mark on the national team as he continues to rise as one of football’s brightest young talents. Coming on at half time in the 3-0 win over Greece and playing the full 90 minutes against the Republic of Ireland, Hall impressed England players and fans alike.

Finally, with Thomas Tuchel taking over as England manager, Hall will have the opportunity to work under the manager that gave him his Chelsea debut. This will no doubt develop his ability as a consistent future starter at the national level.
