Liverpool Look To Spend MORE - Premier League Star Eyed As Salah Replacement (Semenyo)

Why do Liverpool need a new star winger?

After the summer that Liverpool had spending over £400 million many people believed that they would end up walking the league this season, however, that has not been the truth so far. After 10 games Liverpool have lost the same number of games that they had at the end of last season. Part of this is because their main man hasn’t seemed to be able to find the same form that he had last season.

It has been a slow start to the season for the Egyptian King having got 6 goal contributions in 10 league games this season and having 8 contributions in all competitions. The 33-year-old has seemed that his age has finally caught up with him. In fact, after the first few games many Liverpool fans were already calling for his place in the starting lineup to be removed as his performances weren’t warranting him to be in that place.

So, what has happened to the current PFA player of the year who was one of the best in the world last season? Well, he was always going to struggle to repeat the numbers that he had put up last season with over 40 goal contributions in the Premier League but how has the level that he had fallen so much now especially after the investment in players around him from the summer.

Well part of this reason is that the players that were bought in over the summer aren’t performing close to the level that Liverpool would’ve hoped yet especially Wirtz who has struggled to find his old level in the topflight of England. However, he still has the same players around him that he had last season excluding one main person. As much as Liverpool fans don’t want to admit it the loss of Trent has affected Salah as he no longer has the fullback to help him going forward.

What do Liverpool do now?

Liverpool now finds themselves in a very difficult positions going forward as they have a star player who is starting to see his age affect his performance at the top level of football. This issue could be less damaging in the future when Wirtz starts to adapt to the league as well as when Isak finds his fitness level back at the top level, but how do they replace him? The 33-year-old has entered his 9th year at the reds and over those 8 previous years he has been an output machine. Having over 250 goal contributions for Liverpool so anyone who would be looking to take over would be stepping into very big shoes but there is a winger in the Premier League who looks like he would be able to take that expectation and run with it.

This man is Bournemouth’s 25-year-old winger Antoine Semenyo.

Who is Semenyo?

Semenyo has had a long career for a 25-year-old having played for 4 clubs already in his career and all of them being a team from England. His first big break though came in the Championship for Bristol City in 21/22 where he had 20 goal contributions in 31 league games. For a 21-year-old at the time these numbers were very impressive and earned him a well-deserved move to the topflight as Bournemouth spent £10.5 million on the Ghanaian. It took a bit for him to find his feet in the topflight of English football providing 10 g/a in his first full Premier League season. However, last season saw him with 16 g/a in 37 league games for the Cherries. This season started to put his name on the map.

However, if you didn’t know him last season, he has made sure everyone knows his name now especially in the first 10 games of this season. He did it in some style as well, scoring a brace in the opening game against the club that could be looking to sign him as the new King of Liverpool. So far this season he has provided 9 g/a in the first 10 games off the right wing for Bournemouth.

So Why Him?

Well one of the main reasons that Semenyo has been seen as a Salah replacement is his end product. Salah has been vital for Liverpool in the attack providing double digit goals and assists in almost every season he has played for Liverpool. This is something that Semenyo could definitely do at Liverpool especially with the higher quality of players playing alongside him should he join Liverpool.

However, it isn’t just the output that means he would work at Liverpool, his tactical fit would fit them like a glove. He is a very explosive and direct ball carrier. Someone who would look to drive forward and take a man on when attacking. This is something Liverpool like in the wingers as they look to make an opportunity for either themselves of a teammate.

Another reason Liverpool should look to secure the signing of Semenyo is his ability to press and win the ball back. At Bournemouth Iraola plays a very high intensity pressing system similar to what Slot does at Liverpool, and this is shown by Semenyo’s stats winning the ball back in the final third 0.9 times per 90. In fact, this is higher than Salah this season who has a 0.8 possession won in the final third per 90. This high pressing would be vital for a Liverpool winger to have as it’s part of how they attack and score so many goals.

Along with this, he is a very good forward when playing in transition. Liverpool like to move the ball quickly towards their forwards after winning the ball back, so they will be looking for a player who is able to transition from defence to attack well and quickly. This is something Semenyo excels at especially when combining this with his ability to drive with the ball, it makes the perfect winger for Liverpool.

One of the biggest differences that he has with Salah is that he is considerably more two footed than Salah. Salah is known for having a wand of a left foot that has produced a lot of magic for Liverpool over the years, and while his right foot isn’t unless it definitely isn’t close to the level of his left foot. Comparing this to Semenyo who is able to use his right as well as his left it would add a lot more danger to Liverpool. Having a player who can cut off the right and could use both feet adds a high level of unpredictability for the opposing defence.

Having scored 3 goals this season on both feet, it definitely shows why everyone wants him along with the fact he is 25 and about to enter him prime years, it won’t be easy for Liverpool to land the winger’s signature.

What is Bournemouth's stance?

Well, the original asking price for the winger stands at around £70-£75 million however, this could definitely change depending on how the rest of the season goes for the 25-year-old. The signing would most likely have to take place in the summer of 2026 as the chance of Bournemouth parting way with the player who has been instrumental to the amazing start to their season is very low.

However, as expected Liverpool isn’t the only team that is being heavily linked with the Cherries main man with clubs like, Chelsea, Manchester United, Spurs, Bayern and Atletico Madrid also holding interest in the winger. It is expected that the team that gets the wingers signature will have to pay a pretty penny.
