Luton Town vs Leeds United: Match Preview โ€“ A tale Of Two Seasons

An important game at both ends of EFL championship table this Saturday, as second place Leeds United travel to Kenilworth Road to face relegation candidates Luton Town. The lunchtime kick off could decide the season for both sides, as Leeds will be hoping stay in the automatic promotion spots, whilst Luton need a win to increase their survival hopes.

Championship Form and Results

Luton Town

Luton have had a season from hell in the Championship this year. The side showed promise in the Premier League last year despite relegation, and fans were certain that they would bounce back in the Championship, with a squad strong enough to compete at the top.

However, Rob Edwards couldnโ€™t get the same performances out of his side in this season, and departed the club in January after four losses in a row and the Hatters being 20th in league.

Luton had managed to keep their strong core of players ahead of the championship season, and a season in the Premier League would of only improved the players ahead of the Championship.

However, players performances were not up to the standard that fans expected, with strike duo Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo not living up to the expectations after a strong season in the Premier League.

Matt Bloomfield is now in charge of Luton, having left his job at high flying Wycombe Wanderers in order to try and save the Hatters from back to back relegation. Bloomfield hasnโ€™t been successful, winning just three of the thirteen games he has managed, and Luton sitting in 23rd place. Luton however are still just three points from safety, with multiple teams in danger of relegation, so they could still avoid relegation with just a few wins.

Leeds United

After the play off heartbreak last season, losing 1-0 to Southampton at Wembley, many thought Promotion would be tougher for Leeds this year, as three newly relegated teams would be strong sides.

However, Leeds have been in top form this year. Keeping their faith in Daniel Farke, Leeds are second in the league, two points behind first and look to be in a good position of promotion.

Burnley are just behind in third, as they are level on points, so Leeds need to keep on winning to secure their automatic promotion.

Leeds have outscored everyone this year, scoring 78 goals this season, with a goal difference of 51. Even with the loss of top players in Summerville and Rutter, goals still havenโ€™t been a problem for the Yorkshire side. The recent form hasnโ€™t been great for Leeds however, winning only once in their last five. They have dropped multiple points allowing Burnley to close the gap, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier under fire for recent performances.

Luton vs Leeds: Key Statistics

Goals have been an issue for Luton all season. The Hatters are the worst attacking team in the league, having only scored 35 goals all season. In their last five games, they have scored four goals, and have only lost once. Luton subsequently have also got one of the worst defences, conceding 60 goals across the season.

Leeds are the best attacking side in the Championship this season, being the highest scorers in the league, scoring 78 times. The side have also only conceded 27 times this season, second best behind Burnley. They have kept 21 clean sheets all season, and keep an average possession of 61% per game. Leeds like to dominate possession, as it gives them better control of the game, and are able to slowly bait the opposition into pressing the ball before exploiting them spaces.

Predicted Lineups

Luton Predicted Lineup: Kaminski; Bell, McGuiness, Makosso; Doughty, Aasgaard, Clark, Walsh, Jones; Adebayo, Morris

The player to watch for Luton could be Jordan Clark. The Englishman has been deployed as a central midfielder this season, and has been given the license to get forward and join the attack. The midfielder has picked up 5 goals for Luton this season, whilst also getting three assists. The veteran midfielder has been ever present for Luton this season, playing 34 games and is amongst the top of the stats for Luton all season.

Carlton Morris is the top scorer for Luton this season, scoring 7 times this year. Elijah Adebayo has also scored five this season, and both the strikers will be key for this game if they stand any chance of getting a result this Saturday.

Leeds Predicted Lineup: Darlow; Firpo, Rodon, Ampadu, Bogle; Tanaka, Rothwell; Ramazani, Gnonto, James; Piroe

Leeds have many players who could standout in this game, just like they have all season. Junior Firpo has picked up nine assists this season from left back, whilst Jayden Bogle has picked up five goals and two assists from right back. Joel Piroe has scored 15 goals this season, whilst ex Manchester United forward Dan James has scored 10 and assisted nine all season. There are plenty of players to watch in the Leeds side, and Luton could have a horrid time trying to stop Leeds winning.

Tottenham Loanee Manor Solomon also has 7 goals and 7 assists this season, adding to the firepower of the Leeds attack, and it is no surprise as to how Leeds have scored so many this season.

Where To Watch Luton vs Leeds

Luton vs Leeds kicks off at 12:30PM BST on Saturday 5 April. As it is a lunchtime kick off, the game can be watched on Sky Sports Main Event for UK residents, with highlights posted to Sky Sports YouTube straight after the game.

Luton Town vs Leeds United: prediction

Ahead of this crucial game in the Championship, this game means a tremendous amount to both sides. Luton will want to keep stringing results together in hopes that they can avoid the drop this season. Leeds on the other hand will want to win, as they hope Burnley and Sheffield United will drop points so they can get automatic promotion at the end of the season.

The stats donโ€™t look good for Luton, with them struggling to score goals all season, whilst also struggling to keep them out of their own net as well.

Unfortunately for them, Leeds have the best attack in the league, whilst also being strong at the back, making it a very tricky task this Saturday. For this reason, I am backing a Leeds 3-1 win.
