Mason Mount Has Flopped Hard at Manchester United, and Latest Injury Should be the Final Nail in the Coffin

Mount Up and Go
Have Manchester United waited long enough for Mason Mount? For me, he has never been able to build any real momentum at United, and that has become the biggest problem surrounding his future at the club.
Every time it looks like Mount might finally establish himself, another fitness issue seems to interrupt him, just like what happened 20 minutes into the pre-season game against PSG on Saturday. It was another disappointment because Mount seemed to be building some momentum and had enjoyed a good pre-season up to that point, but once again it went downhill at exactly the wrong time with the Premier League season only two weeks away.

You can acknowledge that some injuries are simply bad luck, but after several seasons the pattern shows that this might not just be a matter of bad luck anymore. Mount has become an injury-prone player who United simply cannot rely upon, and Manchester United need players they can plan around for an entire season, which is something he has never given them throughout his time at Old Trafford.
Nobody is denying the talent that Mount has because his pressing, movement, energy and ability to operate in different midfield positions can be incredibly useful when he's fit. My argument isn't that Mount lacks ability, because it's his availability and constant injury issues which have become the problem, and right now that means he simply isn't worth his value to United.
United are still waiting for the Chelsea version of Mount
Manchester United have waited long enough for the Chelsea version of Mason Mount because, when they originally signed him, they were getting a player who had been hugely important for Chelsea and was arguably their best player for at least two years.
That's the Mason Mount supporters have been waiting to consistently see at Old Trafford, and although we've seen glimpses of that player when he's fit, we just can't see it on a regular basis. At some point United have to stop judging Mount on what he could become if everything finally goes right, because I think we've reached the stage where many supporters have given up on waiting for that to happen.
I’d sign this version of Mason Mount in seconds….#AVFC pic.twitter.com/k4fL2XWP1s

We can never seem to get two or three months of a fully fit Mason Mount without another minor issue taking him out for a few weeks or sometimes considerably longer, which makes it almost impossible for him to establish himself in the team.
The number seven shirt also came with huge expectations when Mount arrived, especially when Cristiano Ronaldo had previously worn it during both of his spells at United. The club showed how much belief they had in Mount by giving him such an iconic number, but the frustrating reality is that we rarely get to see him wearing the shirt because he simply isn't available enough.
Michael Carrick can't afford passengers this season
Michael Carrick can't afford to have passengers in a Champions League season because United need as many fit players as possible, especially after people argued that the club benefited last season from being able to focus primarily on the Premier League.
What happens now when Carrick has to juggle the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup while dealing with injury-prone players such as Mount? One of the biggest things Carrick needs is squad depth, but there's little point having that depth on paper if those players aren't consistently available when the manager needs to rotate.
Mason Mount has today ended his 18-year association with Chelsea after completing a permanent move away from the club. ✍️

The biggest example is Bruno Fernandes, who is incredibly reliable and plays an enormous number of minutes every season. Mount is supposed to be one of the players capable of stepping in when Bruno needs a rest or isn't available, but it often feels like whenever United need that alternative, Mount has an injury problem of his own.
Mount's opportunities in those attacking areas are already limited because of Bruno's reliability, but his ability means that, when fit, he could easily fit into Carrick's squad and play a crucial role across several competitions. The problem is that Carrick needs substitutions, rotation options and players he knows he can call upon throughout the season, and Mount simply hasn't shown that he can be that guy.
United need reliability, not potential
This isn't about pretending Mason Mount is a bad footballer because I actually think his ability is more than good enough to play an important role at Manchester United, but being a good player when you're fit just isn't enough anymore.
United have spent several seasons waiting for Mount to stay fit, build momentum and finally become the player they thought they were signing from Chelsea, yet another season is approaching and we're still having exactly the same conversation.
INEOS want to compete against this with Mason Mount in midfield and people are actually okay with it 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/PetzNTkLj5

Michael Carrick needs a squad capable of competing across four competitions, and that means he needs players he can consistently rely upon rather than players he hopes will remain available.
For me, Manchester United have waited long enough for Mason Mount, and unless something drastically changes with his availability, it might finally be time for the club to stop waiting.
