Michail Antonio Returns: What Next For The West Ham Legend?

In December 2024 Michail Antonio had a car crash which saw him battle his injuries both physically and mentally to survive. The West Ham striker’s near-death experience saw him suffer a broken leg, with his femur bone fractured in four different places. Fast forward six months and the 35-year-old has made a miraculous return to football.

How Did The Accident Happen?

Antonio was driving back from training in stormy conditions when he crashed his Ferrari into a tree in Epping Forest. The Jamaican international has no recollection of the accident and was trapped in the backseat of the car. Response teams from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service helped free the forward from the car, with paramedics arriving on the scene shortly after. Due to Storm Darragh, Antonio couldn’t be air lifted to hospital, which meant he was driven to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. He spent three weeks in hospital, with his rehabilitation period not only focused on walking again, but with an aim to return to the pitch.

When Did Antonio Return To Football?

Antonio made his return to professional football on 17th June when Jamaica faced Guatemala in the Gold Cup. The Jamaican forward came on as a substitute in the final five minutes of the match, with his side going on to lose the game 1-0. The West Ham player then made another appearance on 21st June, again coming on as a second half substitute this time against Guadeloupe.

Antonio vowed to return to football at the start of his recovery journey, with his determination and persistence allowing him to be ahead of schedule.

The Jamaican said: “I’m already two to three months ahead of where I should be, I know I’ll play again, and I know once I’m playing the game I’ll get the sharpness back.

“People have always doubted me. My mental strength is something I’ve always believed in. This is just another setback and it is not going to stop me.”

The Reggae Boyz’s currently sit 2nd place in Group C on goals scored, as both themselves and Guatemala are on three points from two games. Their next match is against Panama on 25th June, who have won both of their games and sit top of the group. Will The Striker Stay At West Ham?

His contract with the club runs out on 30th June, but the club have said due to the “unique situation” a decision on his future won’t be made until the circumstances are “right and appropriate”. However due to the Premier League Retained List procedure, the forward will be listed as a free transfer.

The club went on to say: “As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the Club’s absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level.”

Having joined from Nottingham Forest in 2015 for an undisclosed fee of around £7m, Antonio has become the Hammers’ all-time leading Premier League goal scorer with 68 goals in 268 appearances. The Hammers legend was also a part of the team that won the club’s first major trophy in 43 years, as they defeated Fiorentina 2-1 in the Europa Conference League final. While it remains unclear on whether the club icon will stay at the London based team, it’s clear that his time at the club will be remembered by fans for years to come.

What Is Next For Antonio?

Antonio started his return to football back in February, as he flew out to Dubai to complete some warm-weather training to improve his fitness and physical condition. The forward underwent a 12 day rehabilitation plan with a focus on weight training and fitness work. He then reunited with the West Ham team in May as he began some light work at the training ground.

Despite not making his return to the West Ham matchday squad, his involvement in Jamacia’s Gold Cup matches show that the 35-year-old is ready to get back out onto the pitch. It depends on if Hammers manager Graham Potter can see a future for Antonio at the club, with West Ham being linked with several strikers this window. An experienced head in Antonio would prove to be beneficial to have within the club, but the question is does he still have that cutting edge to play in the Premier League?

Regardless of the answer, the fact that the Jamaican would be a free agent, coupled with his years of experience in the Premier League, make him a very attractive option for a club in need of a veteran striker.
