Oblak Leaves Scotland Scratching Heads as He Reminds Everyone He's Still the Shit
The international break has started, and already we have seen some players find themselves again. However, there might not be a player who has managed to roll back the clock more than Jan Oblak.
Yesterday, Slovenia faced Scotland. It should have been a routine win for the Scots. While they were missing their star man, Scott McTominay, they still should have had too much for Slovenia to be able to get a point. However, one man made sure that the points would be shared. Oblak.
What Was Prime Oblak Like?
In the current time in football, you look around the world at the best goalkeepers, and you see David Raya, Thibaut Courtois and Mike Maignan. However, a few years ago, that list had a man who was always considered the best. While he didn't play for the most glamorous team in the world, his ability was nearly unmatched. Oblak was that man — the best. Last night, he decided he wanted to prove to the world that he still was.

To put into perspective how good Oblak was in his prime years, he spent three seasons conceding less than one goal per game. Between 2015/16 and 2017/18, Oblak conceded 61 goals in 105 games. He was getting nearly an 80% save percentage each season, while also keeping around 20 clean sheets.
These stats just show how much of a wall Oblak was when he was at his best.
While you can say, "Well, it's not difficult when Atlético Madrid play a defensive style and focus on defence," his numbers for Slovenia are strong as well. In 72 matches for his nation, he has kept 29 clean sheets. That's a 40% clean-sheet percentage for his nation.
While that might not seem amazing, it is when you look at other goalkeepers. He has more national clean sheets than names including Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris. These are two of the best goalkeepers their nations have ever seen.
Oblak was a different animal during his prime period.
Did He Really Turn Back the Clock?
Last night, Scotland dominated. They had 65% possession and 17 shots. While only five of those were on target, they still challenged Oblak with several big chances. Not a single one managed to beat the 33-year-old.
Oblak made five saves and faced nearly 2 xG worth of shots, yet he wasn't fazed by a single one of them. To add to his saves, they all came from inside the box. They weren't long-range pop shots that Scotland were simply trying their luck with. However, it's his prevention of shots that really showed he still had it.

🔵 Oli McBurnie works his way into the box but Jan Oblak halts his run as he tries to round the Slovenian 'keeper.
🔵 McBurnie does well to set up Billy Gilmour, but his shot is well-saved by Oblak.

Oblak made one high claim alongside 11 recoveries. He was called into action as a sweeper multiple times, and each time, he did exactly what was needed of him. Everything that he did last night was rolling back the clock to when he was unbeatable.
It looked like we had stepped back into the late 2010s.
I think it's fair to say that Scotland were unlucky last night that they played when Oblak was looking to show that he was still one of the best in the world. On any other day, they might have stood a chance. However, not when Oblak was playing like he was.
