Omar Marmoush: The Superb Signing In City’s Struggling Season

The Premier League is no stranger to Egyptian Pharaohs and Kings in recent years, Mohamed Salah setting the pitch a-light weekly with 27 goals and 17 assists. But it seems that the Premier League and Manchester City may have their Egyptian prince in 25-year-old Omar Marmoush.

Time In Germany

Spending his youth career in Germany, Marmoush came up through the ranks at Wolfsburg, being involved in Wolfsburg II action before a loan spell would help the striker begin to find the back of the net – scoring seven times in 21 Bundesliga 2. In the following year, Marmoush on loan to Stuttgart, scoring three times and assisting five goals, while in the 2022/23 season, he would finally be involved for Wolfsburg, playing 33 Bundesliga games and scoring six goals.

However, that still would not be enough for the Egyptian international to stay at the German club with Marmoush moving to a fellow Bundesliga rival and joining Eintracht Frankfurt. The 26-year-old would be an instant hit at Frankfurt, scoring 17 goals and assisting six times in 41 appearances. The attacker would get even better in his second game, scoring 20 goals and assisting 13 in just 26 matches as Marmoush had solidified himself as one of the best players in the German top-flight. The Egyptian’s hybrid playstyle between a winger and striker would cause a threat to any opposing defenders, Marmoush averaging 2.85 successful dribbles, and 2.17 chances created per 90. The striker’s successful second season in Germany would be cut short as he would catch the eyes of Manchester City, the Manchester club deciding to pay a large fee for the Egyptian’s services as they look to rebuild their squad.

Start To Life In Manchester

Marmoush made his move to Manchester in January 2025, signing for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side for a reported of £60m. the Egyptian joined the Citizens, alongside Nico Gonzalez, and Abdoukodir Khusanov as the Spaniard looked to rebuild his ageing City side back to winners. Marmoush would make his debut for the club, five days after joining as City were 3-1 home victors against Chelsea. But the Egyptian would not take long before he would become comfortable at the Etihad Stadium and on the scoresheet. The former Wolfsburg-man netting a first career hat-trick in February as Guardiola’s side beat Newcastle 4-0. In just nine Premier League games, Marmoush has already scored six goals for the Manchester club, with the Egyptian predominantly playing in a role behind Erling Haaland. With only six starts under his belt, in the modern-market, Marmoush looks a brilliant signing for City, and a player that could be key for their future.

Firing The Citizens To Wembley

It has not been the ideal season for Manchester City. Serial winners at domestic level in English football under Pep Guardiola. League winners four times in a row. However, this season has been an anomaly at the Etihad. City slipping away from Arne Slot’s Liverpool in the title race and simply competing for UEFA Champions League football next season. The Manchester Club were also disappointingly dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham. On the other hand, City’s season was similarly underwhelming in Europe, Real Madrid professionally dealing with City in the Champions League’s Round of 32.

The Citizen’s season came down to a fixture at the Vitality Stadium. A clash against AFC Bournemouth in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup as both clubs looked to secure a place at Wembley and Guardiola’s side looked to stay in the race to win a title. After the first 45 minutes, it looked like more doom and gloom this season for City, Haaland missing a penalty in the first 15 minutes before Evanilson put the hosts into the lead. Nico O’Reilly would make a quick impact for the visitors after being substituted into the fray at half-time, providing the assist for Haaland’s equaliser. As the game hit the hour mark, City would have to overcome another obstacle, their Norwegian talisman suffering a knee injury and having to be substituted.

Marmoush would be Haaland’s replacement, and with the Egyptian being asked to operate in a different and central striker role. But it would be the 26-year-old that would place City into the lead after being on the pitch for just two minutes, with Marmoush’s goal being the games decider, sending Guardiola’s team to Wembley. Within 29 minutes of action, City’s Egyptian had saved their season and kept their trophy dreams. On the other hand, the Citizen’s Norwegian talisman continues to remain out with injury, with Marmoush the beneficiary, starting all of City’s last three Premier League matches, the Egyptian scoring two goals.

Looking back at the January window, it is hard to see a deal that was as impactful or value for money, as Manchester City’s signing of Omar Marmoush. A player that could lead them forward for several season.
