Ronald Araújo to Liverpool: Fans Split Over Shock Deal

Liverpool Blog

Online Fans Are Extremely Divided Regarding Araújo to Liverpool

Merely 72 hours ago, the news broke via a Fabrizio Romano exclusive that Liverpool were set to complete the loan signing of Barcelona centre back and captain Ronald Araújo.

In fact, I was so taken aback, I had to double check it wasn't a spoof account (there are considerably too many of those these days), one impersonating the Italian social butterfly.

The 27-year-old Uruguyan is understood to have now completed his medical.

Araújo is undoubtedly a household name in world football and this signing three years ago perhaps would've been something to gloat about. However with the issues Araújo has faced in recent times, this deal flatters to deceive.

A Sign of Liverpool's Newfound Reactiveness in the Market?

The Liverpool of old under the management and supervision of Jürgen Klopp, Michael Edwards and Ian Graham, operated on a different level to most others clubs, particularly in the transfer market.

Foreseeing issues and player departures before they arose (e.g. the Coutinho saga and ultimate sale), meant that replacements were identified way in advance.

Nowadays Liverpool seem a lot more reactive to things that happen to them both directly and indirectly. For instance, the club knew losing Salah was a formality at least by March, if not before then. However a natural right-sided replacement still hasn't been achieved as of right now.

Fans React on Social Media

This breaking news has brought out the best of football twitter.

A portion of traumatised Barcelona fans ecstatic to see them get rid of their captain...

Liverpool fans showing the true duality of a football fanbase...

And rival fans seem relatively optimistic too...

But one person takes the crown. Sorry Arsenal fans...

A Case of Collateral Damage?

All fun and jokes aside.

It is no secret Araújo's reputation as a professional footballer has taken a significant hit in recent times.

Only last November did he produce arguably one of the clumsiest performances from any Barcelona captain in their history - getting sent off before half time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, costing his team the chance at a 2nd half comeback.

Some can argue too much is being asked of him at Barcelona under Hansi Flick. Tasked with being the leader of a relatively young and inexperienced back-line when he has always been a bulish wide channel defender, similar to Ibrahima Konaté.

Placed alongside someone with Van Dijk’s intelligence and authority, Araújo might finally unlock his full potential, with those weaknesses of his naturally being covered.

Flick's suicidal high-line doesn't exactly negate mistakes from players who may have a bozo gene in them.

When he puts on the Liverpool shirt, I will back him to the hilt, however I'm not so convinced by the signing or the planning and strategy behind it.
