Salah: Where Does He Sit in the Pantheon of PL Greats?

Having recently released his shocking announcement stating he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, Mohamed Salah has the whole footballing world talking. Amongst this is the everlasting debate... where does Salah rank among the plethora of some of the greatest players the Premier League has ever seen?

Thierry Henry

When you talk about Premier League greatness, this is the name that always comes up first.

Thierry Henry was not just elite, he was different. 175 Premier League goals, multiple Golden Boots and the main man in that iconic Invincibles season. He had everything. Pace, technique, finishing, creativity. There was genuinely nothing he could not do on a football pitch.

What separates Henry is how effortless he made it look.

Week in, week out, defenders knew exactly what he was going to do and still could not stop him. Cutting in from the left, opening his body and passing it into the far corner. It became inevitable.

Salah is closer to Henry than people think. In terms of numbers, he is right there. Goals, assists, consistency at the highest level. But Henry just had that aura. That feeling that he was the best player on the pitch every single game.

That is the level Salah is being compared to, and the fact it is even a debate says everything about his Liverpool career.

Cristiano Ronaldo

This one is always a bit different because you are talking about two versions of Ronaldo.

The first spell at Manchester United saw a young, electric winger develop into a Ballon d’Or winner. 84 goals in his first Premier League run, incredible numbers for a wide player at the time, especially in an era where the league was far more physical.

Then he came back. Even in his second spell, older and less mobile, he still delivered goals. That tells you everything about his mentality and quality.

But here is where Salah has a real argument. Salah has done it longer in the Premier League. Season after season, hitting 20+ goals, consistently being the main man for Liverpool. Ronaldo hit incredible heights, but over a shorter Premier League period.

It depends what you value, peak or longevity.

Salah might not have hit the same individual peak as Ronaldo in 2008, but over time, his body of work in the Premier League is stronger than a lot of people realise.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is the definition of a Premier League legend.

208 goals, the second highest in the league’s history, and he did it all. He was not just a goalscorer either. He dropped deep, created chances, worked defensively and led the line for Manchester United for over a decade. Rooney sacrificed numbers at times for the team.

That is what makes comparing him to Salah interesting. Salah has always been the focal point, the main goal threat. Rooney often was not, especially when playing alongside players like Ronaldo.

But the consistency is similar. Year after year, Rooney delivered. Big goals, big moments, and he was a key part of multiple title winning sides.

Salah probably edges him in pure goal output from a wide position, which is ridiculous in itself. But Rooney’s all round game and longevity keep him right up there in this conversation.

Alan Shearer

The all time top scorer. 260 Premier League goals. That record still stands and it is not even close to being broken anytime soon.

Shearer was relentless. Year after year, goals, goals, goals. It did not matter who he was playing for, Blackburn or Newcastle, he delivered.

Comparing him to Salah is tough. Different eras, different roles, different styles. Shearer was a traditional number nine, physical, dominant and deadly in the box. Salah is a wide forward, creating and scoring in equal measure.

But numbers matter, and Salah’s numbers are starting to creep into that elite territory. He is not going to catch 260, but the consistency he has shown in a more demanding modern game deserves huge credit.

Shearer set the benchmark and Salah is one of the few who has come close to matching that level of consistency in the modern era.

Where Does Salah Sit?

When you look at the names above, Salah is not out of place at all. In fact, he might be ahead of a few. In terms of pure Premier League impact, consistency and numbers, he is right near the very top.

And when you really break down the stats, it becomes even clearer.

Salah is not just scoring goals, he is doing everything. Season after season hitting 20+ league goals, while also consistently putting up strong assist numbers as well. He has multiple 10+ assist seasons to go alongside Golden Boots, which is something not many players can say. That ability to both score and create at an elite level is what separates him from a lot of others.

He is not just finishing chances, he is making them too.

You can argue Henry is still number one, and there is a case for others depending on what you value, but Salah is firmly in that top tier. Not just a Liverpool legend, but one of the greatest the Premier League has ever seen.
