Serie A Top 4 Race: Who Has The Hardest Run-In?

As the season is coming to a close, there is still plenty up for grabs across the league in Serie A.

With Napoli and Inter fighting it out for the title and a three team race between Empoli, Venezia and Lecce to avoid relegation, it would be easy for top four qualification to get lost in the shuffle.

However, with Juventus, Roma, Lazio, Bologna, Milan and Fiorentina all fighting for one spot, we’ve decided to take a look at who has the best chance heading into the final few weeks of the season.

Juventus: 4th - 63 points

Remaining fixtures

  • Lazio (A)
  • Udinese (H)
  • Venezia (A)

Juventus have spent the most time in the Champions League qualification spots compared to the other five contenders.

The Old Lady currently sit on 63 points after 35 matches. With a favourable last three fixtures, Juventus are expected to be in the driver's seat for qualification if they can get past Lazio, who sit in 6th position.

Udinese and Venezia both reside in the bottom half of the table but depending on results elsewhere Venezia could throw a spanner in the works as they continue their fight against relegation.

Roma: 5th - 53 points

Remaining fixtures

  • Atalanta (A)
  • Milan (H)
  • Torino (A)

Having struggled early in the season, Roma’s turnaround under Claudio Ranieri has been nothing short of spectacular.

Giallorossi currently sit level on points with Juventus, separated by a goal differential of two.

Undefeated in their last five matches, Roma will be confident in picking up results to end the campaign but it will be an uphill battle.

An away clash with Atalanta could put their UEFA Champions League hopes in jeopardy as the the reigning Europa League champions have had another successful season sitting in 3rd place.

A matchup with Milan is set to follow in what could be a qualification decider for both clubs.

Lazio: 6th - 63 points

Remaining fixtures

  • Juventus (H)
  • Inter (A)
  • Lecce (H)

Having been knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the quarter final stage, Lazio’s last hope of qualifying for the Champions League rests on league position.

With one of the tougher remaining schedules, Lazio have the opportunity to have an impact on the entire table.

Wins against Juventus and Inter would essentially end both team’s pursuits for Champions League qualification and a league title respectively, while a victory against Lecce could relegate the opposition.

Inter are expected to be the biggest threat to Lazio’s qualification hopes as Inzaghi’s side are in the midst of completing the double by winning the UEFA Champions League and Serie A.

Bologna: 7th - 62 points

Remaining fixtures

  • Fiorentina (A)
  • Genoa (H)

Bologna were the surprise outfit of last season. Having lost key pieces of the squad that qualified for last season's UEFA Champions League, many had expected Bologna to fall back down the table.

However, Vincenzo Italiano’s side sit 7th in the Serie A table, just one point behind 4th place.

With just two games remaining, Bologna have a strong chance of qualifying for the competition for a second successive season if results elsewhere go their way.

Fiorentina will be their toughest test to end the season as both teams share a common goal and are currently on the outside looking in.

Milan: 8th - 60 points

  • Remaining fixtures
  • Roma (A)
  • Monza (H)

Milan have had a season to forget. With aspirations of challenging for the title, I Rossineri have found themselves on the outskirts of European qualification for the majority of the campaign.

Having secured a 3-1 win against Bologna in what was a must win fixture, Sergio Conceicao’s side find themselves just three points behind Juventus for the final spot but have also played an extra game.

An away fixture against Roma is expected to be another do or die match for Milan, who then welcome already relegated Monza in a favourable clash that they hope will have meaningful stipulations come the final day.

Fiorentina: 9th - 59 points

Remaining fixtures

  • Venezia (A)
  • Bologna (H)
  • Udinese (A)

Potentially the biggest outsiders in the fight for Champions League football, Fiorentina find themselves four points behind the final qualification spot with three games to play.

With what looks to be an easier schedule compared to the majority of their fellow contenders, the points differential may be enough to miss out on a place.

Fiorentina will need every team above them to drop points at some stage if they wish to defy the odds.

While it may be a long shot in what is such a tightly contested group, Fiorentina are still present in the race.
