Sky Bet League Two Fixtures Previewed: Your Guide To Every Match

After what always feels like a huge break between the conclusion of the football season to the start of the new campaign, League Two football returns on Saturday 2nd August. This article will take you through every matchday one encounter with all 12 ties analysed ahead of the opening weekend of action. Make sure to check out our League Two predictions ahead of the new season after reading this article.

Accrington Stanley vs Gillingham

Accrington Stanley were unbeaten against Gillingham when the two sides met last season, as the ‘Owd Reds beat and drew to the Gills. After narrowly avoiding relegation by one point last season, the home side will be hoping to start their season on the front foot.

Gillingham come into this contest unbeaten against their opponents across their last seven league away games, having won five times and drawn twice. The Gills will hope to stretch that tally to eight matches on Saturday afternoon. Gillingham have travelled to Accrington Stanley on the opening day of the season before, back in the 2018/19 campaign when they won 2-0.

Barnet vs Fleetwood Town

The National League champions Barnet have a home tie against Fleetwood Town to kickstart their campaign, playing their first League Two match since 2018. This is just the third meeting between the two clubs in the EFL, with Barnet having won the last fixture 2-0 in March 2013. The Bees are unbeaten in their last five games in the fourth tier of English football and will be hoping to extend that number to six after their opening match on Saturday.

Fleetwood Town finished last season in 14th place and come into his tie with some poor form. The Fishermen have an inferior record against teams from London as they were unable to win any of their last four league matches, failing to score in all four encounters. Fleetwood will hope to have better luck against League Two newcomers Barnet on Saturday.

Bristol Rovers vs Harrogate Town

After being relegated from League One last season, Bristol Rovers will look to get their League Two campaign off to a bright start in front of their own fans. However history suggests that won’t be the case, as the Gas have lost 13 matchday one games since the 2004/05 season. That is the highest of any team since the rebranding of the EFL in the 2004/05 campaign. However fans can take comfort in knowing that their club are unbeaten in their last 13 home matches in League Two.

Harrogate Town have only faced their opponents twice before in the EFL, with Bristol Rovers winning both encounters to nil in the 2021/22 season. The Sulphurites however boast a better record on the opening day, winning their first four EFL matches between 2020 and 2023. That run came to an end when they lost to Bromley 2-0 last season.

Cambridge United vs Cheltenham Town

Cambridge United are unbeaten in their last seven opening EFL encounters played at home, accumulating five wins and two draws over that period. However when facing Cheltenham Town the U’s have lost their last four leagues matches, each by a margin of just one goal. After a disappointing campaign in League One last season, Cambridge will hope to bounce straight back to the third tier.

Cheltenham Town have only won one of their last nine opening EFL encounters, a complete contrast in form compared to their opposition. However that one win did come in the 2024/25 campaign when they beat Newport County 3-2. The Robins have a good record against Cambridge, having lost only one of the last 11 ties against the U’s.

Chesterfield vs Barrow

Chesterfield come into this season off the back of a well-respected 7th place finish, with promotion potentially being on the cards this campaign. The Spireites completed the league double over Barrow last season, and will be looking to win three in a row against their opponents for the first time since 1933.

Barrow have won their last three opening fixtures of a season and will hope to start strongly again this campaign against Chesterfield. However the Bluebirds have a terrible record against the Spireites, winning just one of their last 27 away games against the club.

Colchester United vs Tranmere Rovers

Colchester United are winless in their last 11 opening EFL matches, with their most recent triumph coming in the 2013/14 campaign against Gillingham. The U’s completed the league double against Tranmere Rovers last season, the first time since the 1978/79 campaign. Colchester are also unbeaten in their previous five encounters with the Rovers.

Tranmere Rovers are winless in their last five EFL matches against their opponents, as their last victory came in 2019 when they won 2-0. It gets worse for the Rovers, as they have only won once in their previous nine opening EFL matches. That win came in the 2021/22 season when they beat Walsall 1-0.

Grimsby Town vs Crawley Town

Grimsby Town are another team to hold a poor opening day record, having lost their last four opening day EFL encounters. They were unable to score in any of those fixtures as well, a stat they will be looking to discard by Saturday evening. The Mariners don’t boast a great record against their opponents either, winning just four of their previous 14 Football League matches against Crawley Town.

Crawley Town on the other hand will feel confident heading into this encounter, having completed their first ever EFL double over Grimsby during the 2023/24 campaign. However the Red Devils have lost their last four opening away games of the season, swinging the tie back into the balance.

MK Dons vs Oldham Athletic

MK Dons lost their opening match last season 2-1 against Bradford City. During that game the Dons conceded the second fastest opening game week goal in League Two since the 2013/14 season at 98 seconds. The club boast an impressive record against Oldham Athletic, winning eight of their previous 10 league games against the Latics.

Oldham Athletic joined Barnet in getting promoted to League Two, as they won the play-offs to secure their place in the EFL. The Latics will look to cause an upset on Saturday, as they have lost six of their last seven away league games against MK Dons. Oldham have also lost their last six opening EFL matches, with only one goal scored across that period.

Newport County vs Notts County

Newport County have only one victory in their last 11 opening Football League games. The Ironsides are also winless in their last four Football League encounters against Notts County. In each of those matches, the Magpies have scored two or more goals against Newport County.

Notts County begin their 2025/26 campaign with a fixture away from home, which is the 70th time this has happened in the club’s history. This is a joint record for a team playing their opening match on the road, with Northampton Town sharing the accolade with the Magpies. This will be the fourth time Notts County have started their season in Wales, having faced Wrexham twice and Swansea on one occasion to kickstart their campaign. The oldest professional football club in the world will hope to start the new season on the front foot.

Salford City vs Crewe Alexandra

Salford City were unbeaten in their opening matches between the 2019/20 season to the 2023/24 campaign. However in the 2024/25 season they lost 2-0 at home to Port Vale to end the five-year streak. The Ammies haven’t lost to Crewe Alexandra in their last four league meetings with the club.

Crewe Alexandra are winless in their previous four away games against Salford, losing three of those matches and drawing one. Three of the four encounters have led to the Railwaymen conceding three or more goals. Having lost four of their last five matches last season Crewe will be looking to start afresh heading into the new campaign.

Shrewsbury Town vs Bromley

This will be the first time that the two clubs have faced up against each other, so both sides don’t have any previous matches they can rewatch in preparation for the game. However when Shrewsbury have faced clubs from London, they have won only once in their last 12 encounters. The club who was rock bottom of League One last season have won three of their last eight opening games in the EFL.

Bromley however have a good record against teams who have been relegated from League One, losing just two of their eight previous league games. This stat bodes well for the Ravens, as they look to build on their impressive away form from last season. They won eight away matches last campaign, with only Grimsby (with 10 wins) having a better record from teams that finished outside of the top seven.

Walsall vs Swindon Town

Walsall have won their last five opening matches in a season when playing at home, as they beat Morecambe 1-0 last campaign. However their record against Swindon Town isn’t as good, as the Saddlers have won just two of their previous 11 home league encounters against the Robins.

Swindon Town have an impressive opening day record, losing just one out of their last 11 EFL opening day matches. During this fantastic run of form, the Robins have averaged over two goals per game. Swindon will be looking to win back-to-back away league games versus Walsall since September 2010 - November 2012.
