Sunderland’s New Shirt is a BEAUTY - Which Other 2026/27 Retro Entries Can Compete?

Yesterday, Sunderland revealed their new home shirt for the upcoming 2026/27 season and it is a thing of beauty. The shirt pays tribute to their 1937 FA Cup win where they overcame Preston North End in the Final.

The shirt is the usual red and white stripes but it has “a subtle jacquard pattern” and a monogram of the letter "S created using the handles of the FA Cup”. The current club crest is still on the shirt but has been placed in a black shield and the back of the shirt features the original crest as well as a tribute to the starting eleven for the historic moment for the club.

Sunderland are not the only club that have gone retro with their shirts for the upcoming football season, so let’s take a look at some others.

Paris Saint-Germain Home Shirt

Back to back European Champions, Paris Saint-Germain, have released their kit for the upcoming season and it is a throwback to their kits from the 1990’s. They have gone with a more vibrant blue colour matched with a singular wider red stripe down the middle compared to smaller stripes used in recent years. The Nike logo, sponsor, and club crest are all centered within the red stripe to create a neat look which once again is similar to shirts of the past.

Liverpool Away Shirt

This white away kit will remind many fans of the shirt worn by the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. It is a plain white shirt with red detailing on the collar and shoulders and the red Adidas Originals logo in the corner. It without a doubt has the opportunity to become a classic for many years to come if Andoni Iraola’s men were to have a successful season donning the retro but new look.

Crystal Palace Home Shirt

Despite Crystal Palace of recent years being known for their red and blue colours, they have gone back in time with this year's home shirt. Back in 1976, the South London based club first introduced a sash across their kit which is what they have gone back to 50 years later. The shirt is white with a red and blue sash diagonally across it and red and blue detailing on the shoulders and collar. In terms of the badge, they have used a circular club crest which was originally used between 1973 and 1987. A classic for sure!
