The 10 Best Football Kits Of All Time (Ranked)

Football has been played for well over 100 years now, and throughout that long existence football clubs and national teams from all around the world have displayed stunning shirts on the pitch. Narrowing down the best football kits of all time to ten may seem like an almost impossible task but we’ve tried our best

Whether its purely design or with help from the achievements done wearing the shirt, here’s our ranking for the ten best football kits of all time.

10: Croatia – 1998 Home

Kicking off is a true classic from the 1998 World Cup in France, where Croatia, appearing at a tournament for the first time as an independent nation following the separation of Yugoslavia in 1991, donned their soon-to-be iconic white with a red checkered pattern, with this edition featuring a specially striking design from manufacturer Lotto.

And Croatia didn’t just look good on the pitch; they played good too. As they stunned the world to reach the semi-finals and finish third in the tournament, with star striker Davor Suker winning the Golden Boot.

9: Brazil – 1994 Home

Another classic national shirt from the 90s, the yellow of Brazil is one of football’s most iconic symbols, but their best example is likely the edition worn at the 94’ World Cup in the USA.

Bright and bold, the shirt embodies the Brazilian ‘Joga Bonito’ spirit perfectly. With the design also featuring the Brazilian football federation logo in the background of the shirt to give it that extra character.

And the shirt would earn its place in folklore as the Brazilians would be crowned champions of the world in America, winning the final on penalties over Italy.

8: Celtic – 1997-99 Home

The green and white horizontal stripes of Glasgow Celtic are the very definition of football heritage.

So good they wore it in back-to-back seasons, the 1997-1999 home shirt for the Bhoys is a magnificent image of a golden era for the club, where, spearheaded by legendary striker Henrik Larsson, Celtic reigned supreme in Glasgow and all of Scotland.

No list of the best football shirts is complete without an entry from Celtic, and with its simple but beautiful design, centred badge and giant Umbro logo, we couldn’t not include this one.

7: Boca Juniors – 1981/82 Home

Any shirt worn by Diego Maradona will go down in history in Argentina, but the one the legend wore for Boca Juniors in the 1981/82 season is undoubtedly one of the best in football history.

In fact, the shirt was once voted as the best ever by over 100,000 in a survey, and it's not hard to see why.

The classic Boca design of blue with yellow going across the front, with the initials of the club in stars, goes down as one of Adidas’s finest efforts.

6: Internazionale - 1991/92 away

There can’t be much doubt that not many European clubs can boast more impressive shirts across their history than Inter Milan.

Whether it's their blue and black home shirts or away shirts, Inter constantly deliver whatever the maker. One of their most iconic efforts was Umbro’s 1991/92 away shirt. Featuring a mainly white front with a black and blue pattern at the top with the classic Inter logo, the shirt screams vintage football.

Unfortunately for the Nerazzurri, the shirt didn’t have the success it deserved. As the club could only manage an 8th-place finish in Serie A and failed to win either the Coppa Italia or UEFA Cup.

5: Arsenal – 1991/93 Away

Branded a shocker when first released, Adidas’s 1991-93 Arsenal away kit has since gone down in football shirt legend.

The ‘Bruised Banana’, as it has become known, is an example of one of the most unique designs ever seen in a football shirt. And even though it could have easily failed, the colour scheme, simple sponsor and the iconic stripes on the shoulder all combine to make it work.

Arsenal have had a strong collection of kits over the years, but this one is surely the most iconic.

4: Fiorentina – 1998/99 Home

Yet another edition from the 1990s, the Fiorentina home shirt from the 1998-99 season represents an iconic era for Italian football.

La Viola rarely miss when it comes to their home shirts, and this particular example features one of the most iconic sponsors ever seen on a football kit, with the white of the shoulders also blending in perfectly with the elegant purple.

Add legendary striker Gabriel Batistuta smashing in goals, and you have one magnificent a football shirt

3: Netherlands – 1988 Home

Potentially the most iconic national team shirt ever, the 1988 home kit worn by the Dutch has gone down in folklore as a holy grail for collectors, and for good reason.

A design so good it's been unofficially replicated hundreds of times around the world, the shirt was worn by some of the greatest to ever play the game and is a perfect example of how sometimes the simplest kits are the best.

Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard were just a few of the names who donned a shirt that has gone on to be a symbol of Dutch total football.

2: Nigeria – 2018 Home

A modern classic, you know a shirt is good when it sells out worldwide in minutes, and then again, and then again.

A pattern and design from Nike that had never been seen before, the Super Eagles took to the field in the Russia World Cup certainly looking the best no matter who they played.

It's already gone down in legend and will forever be remembered as one of the best shirts seen at a World Cup

1: Club America 1994 – Home

Whilst any of the shirts featured in this list could make a case for being number 1, and also some that didn’t quite make the cut, nothing quite beats the Club America 1994 home shirt. Adidas simply smashed it out the park with this design for the Mexican giants.

The very definition of stylishness, boldness and vibrancy. With the brilliant club badge blending in perfectly with the striking pattern seen on the top front with the Coca-Cola logo, it truly is a masterpiece and one of football’s most iconic symbols.
