The 10 Biggest Yo-Yo Clubs in English Football History

Promotion and relegation are some of the great things about the English game. The joy of seeing your club achieve the success of playing in a higher division the following season, mixed with the misery of a poor season resulting in a relegation to a lower division, is why there are so many fans of the sport.

If your club is seen as a yo-yo club, it probably means that you have been on a wild roller coaster ride as a fan over the years. One thing is for certain; it isn’t boring being a fan of a yo-yo club, as there is often something to play for each season.

It would be nice not to have to worry about relegation every few seasons; however, it would give you a good reason to go to the games to support the team rather than being sat in mid-table most seasons and your season being over relatively early on. Sorry, Stoke fans!

Top 10 Biggest Yo-Yo Clubs in English Football History

10. Grimsby Town (32 Promotions/Relegations)

Based on a slightly different metric to the rest of this ranking, Grimsby Town are the team with the most promotions/relegations in the history of English football. Their fifteen promotions and seventeen relegations make the Mariners deserve a spot on this list even though they haven’t gone through a long, successive yo-yo period.

9. Norwich City (4 Seasons)

Norwich are the first of many on this list to have gone four back-to-back seasons of promotions and relegations. For the Canaries, this occurred between 2018/19 and 2022/23, when they were jumping between the Championship and the Premier League. Unfortunately, since 2023, they have not yet returned to the Premier League.

Norwich are playing Brentford tonight, if they win it, they’ll go 10 points clear at the top of the table with 12 games left to play.

They are the absolute definition of a “yo-yo side” in my mind. It feels like they’ve promoted or relegated every year since 2001.

8. Wigan Athletic (4 Seasons)

Since a relatively long stay in the Premier League in the early 2000s, Wigan Athletic have found themselves to be quite a distance from a return to the top flight. Currently sitting in League One, the Latics’ longest yo-yo period came between 2015 and 2019, where they fluctuated between the second and third tiers of English football.

7. Wycombe Wanderers (4 Seasons)

Wycombe Wanderers are certainly a club that has been on the rise in the last few years, with their first season in the Championship occurring in the 2020/21 season and a return not looking too far away. However, this period in which they were a yo-yo club for four seasons came in a period between 2009 and 2013 where they found themselves swapping between League Two and League One football.

6. Birmingham City (4 Seasons)

Much like Wigan, Birmingham City are a club that have seen better days in the past, but unlike Wigan, they don’t seem too far from being back in the top flight since the new ownership has taken over. This period in which they were fluctuating between the Premier League and the Championship between 2006 and 2010 marks the beginning of this decline that they suffered.

5. Carlisle United (4 Seasons)

The only club on this list that does not currently play in the top four divisions in English football is Carlisle United. The now National League side had a period of switching between League One and League Two between the 1994/95 and 1998/99 seasons and fans will be hoping they can see their team competing in these divisions again in the near future.

4. Bolton Wanderers (4 Seasons)

The first club on this list to see four back-to-back promotions or relegations in English football is Bolton Wanderers. This occurred right back in 1908 when for four seasons, they found themselves too good for Division Two but not quite good enough for Division One. A number of years later they repeated this when they were yo-yoing between the Premier League and Division One in 1995.

In recent years Fulham have been a rather stable Premier League side, and this season might even have a chance to earn European football come the end of the season. However, the Cottagers have not always been able to sustain their Premier League status, as between 2018 and 2023 they were constantly finding themselves switching between Championship and Premier League status.

2. Wimbledon (5 Seasons)

Nowadays Wimbledon are known as AFC Wimbledon since the reform of the club and are currently a League One club. However, back in 1979 they were struggling to maintain their position in Division Three and found themselves fluctuating between Division Three and Four for five consecutive seasons.

1. Rotherham United (6 Seasons)

Rotherham United have officially had the longest spell as a yo-yo club in English football and it happened quite recently. The Millers are struggling this season and find themselves at a huge risk of being relegated to League Two, which would be a terrible season for a club that was in the Championship not long ago. Their six-season yo-yo period actually came in a period recently between 2017 and 2023 where they were switching between the Championship and League One football. They would love that right now!
