USA Men's Soccer has seen a rise in emerging talent in recent years. With Christian Pulisic, Florian Balogun, Antonee Robinson and Ricardo Pepi, to name just a few, showcasing their ability in abundance in some of Europe's top leagues.

But soon the USMNT could have one of the world's very best in their ranks, with a 16-year-old from Philadelphia taking the country's national top league, and soon potentially the Premier League, by storm.

That player is Cavan Sullivan, a versatile midfielder capable of playing both centrally and out wide, who was born and raised in the Pennsalvanyian captial city of Philadelphia, on September 28 2009.

In 2020, at the age of 11, Sullivan joined the youth ranks of local MLS side Philadelphia Union, and made his professional debut for the club's Next Gen side in an MLS Next Pro match by coming on as a subsitute in the 56th minute, and helped provide an assist for a late winner as Philadelphia won the match 2-1.

Sullivan's form in the youth ranks prompted the youngster to sign his first homegrown contract with the Union in May 2024, in the process becoming the fifth youngest player in the history of the MLS to sign a first-team deal.

But the contract had one particularly crucial detail, as was later confirmed by Union, Sullivan and his family - the deal contained a pre-agreement clause that allowed Sullvian to join then-Premier League champions Manchester City following the expiration fo his contract in 2028 with the Manchester side already seeing their eyes caught by the talent of the American teenager.

First Team Breakthrough

It would not take long following the signing of that contract for Sullivan to get his chance to shine in the Union's first team squad. As on July 17 2024 and aged 14 years and 293 days, Sullivan made his first-team MLS debut for Philadelphia Union, the appearence made MLS history, as Sullivan became the youngest player to appear not just in the MLS, but in a major professional sports league in the United States and Canada across all different sports. In the process breaking a ten-year old record set by Freddy Adu in 2004, who was 13 days older.

Sullivan remained mostly in the club's Next Gen side for the majority of the 2024 season, before making 16 first-team appearences during the following campaign, with 13 coming in the MLS, but it would be the 2026 season where Sullivan's first-team career would explode into life.

On February 26 2026, during the open weeks of the brand-new Major League Soccer season, Sullivan would find the net for the first time for the Philadelphia Union first team, scoring two goals in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, winning Man of the Match and also providing two assists as well as his brace.

And in the second half of the season, Sullvian would see himself properly breakthrough into the club's main starting XI, scoring his first goal in May during a defeat to Orlando City, and has not looked back since. Across the 25 matches that have been played during the MLS campaign so far, Sullivan has appeared in 23, starting 16, and scored nine goals whilst also providing nine assists in all competitions from the heart of midfield.

On September 5th, Sullivan scored for the third consecutive match in MLS, finding the net in a 2-0 win over CF Montréal, which also broke another record orginally held by Freddy Adu, as Sullivan broke his record for the most goal contriubtions in an MLS season by a 16 year-old. Whilst also becoming the first teenager in the league's history to register a goal contribution in five consecutive matches.

And Sullivan's form for the Union is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, with his most recent match for the club perhaps catching the most attention of all. The teenager and the Union travelled to face San Diego FC away on September 14th, and Sullivan ran the show, helping Philadelphia to storm to a 0-5 thrashing victory.

Sullivan scored twice, putting him up to six goals for the MLS season, with his first being particuarlly brilliant.

With the score still 0-0 after 49 minutes, Philidelphia would find their breakthrough through their teenage sensation, who excellently turned home the ball with a first-time backheel effort to stun the San Diego goalkeeper and defence.

His second was a low, powerful and accurate finish into the far bottom corner from the left side of the box, showing once more the teenager's ability to get himself on the scoresheet with runs from midfield.

What Will Sullivan Bring to City?

Sullivan still has two years left on his contract at the Union, not joining the English side until 2028 when the American will be 18 years old, by which point he could very much have established himself as one of hte world's most exciting young talents despite not playing in a top European league.

A creative midfielder with exellenet vision, eye for pass, dribbling and an eye for goal, Sullivan can bring almost the complete midfield package to Manchester City in two years time.

The Citizens already have a number of talent young players in their ranks, and Sullivan will only add to that as one of the most exicting talents to ever emerge from the United States.
