The Biggest Shithouse In Football: Spurs Defender Strikes Again

Shithousery is undoubtedly one of the best bits about football.

Watching one of your players rile up opposition fans by merely existing is a guilty (or not so much) pleasure that brings unbridled joy to the often anxiety-ridden life of a football fanatic.

Over the years, goal celebrations have become one of the most potent ways to get under the opposition's skin.

Think of Jamie Vardy prancing around and flapping his arms like a bird in front of the Crystal Palace fans after smashing one into their onion bag.

Or Emmanuel Adebayor frantically sprinting the entire length of the pitch just to celebrate right in the face of those who once sang his name.

There have been some iconic shithouse celebrations, and last night we got another one courtesy of Spurs captain Cristian Romero.

The Romero vs Guimaraes Rivalry

If you don't know by now, Romero and Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes aren't exactly best friends – in fact, referring to them as mortal enemies is probably more fitting.

Not only do they appear to have some serious personal issues with each other, but there is also the added fuel of the Brazil vs Argentina rivalry, which only adds fuel to the already roaring fire.

The two have had multiple tiffs when facing each other, with the last fixture before yesterday seeing a tussle unfold resulting in Guimaraes grabbing Romero around the throat.

It's safe to say yesterday was no different from those previous meetings.

Both Bruno G. and Romero managed to get on the scoresheet, with the latter scoring twice and rescuing a point for his side.

Both of the Argentinian's goals were celebrated in prime shithouse fashion, with the centre back replicating the celebration of his arch nemesis both times.

As you'd imagine, this didn't exactly go down well with the Newcastle man, and yet another scuffle ensued at full-time, with the two having to be pulled apart.

It was a bit of shithousery of the highest standard and something we have come to expect from Spurs' Argentinian captain.

A Shithouse Specialist

Romero has become quite the expert in getting a reaction from both those on the pitch with him and those in the stands during his stretch in the Premier League.

Usually it's due to his rash challenges and serious disregard for the health and safety of his opponents on almost every level, but it now seems he has widened his scope to encompass even more facets of being a wind-up merchant.

If you want a snapshot of just what type of player Romero is, well, just take one look at this yellow card tally, and it's pretty clear. He's already served a one-game ban for the number of cards he's accumulated.

But, in truth, Romero offers so much more than just yellow cards and wind-up.

One of The Best In The League?

In fairness, Spurs fans have been banging on about just how good Cristian Romero is for a good while now.

And whilst we always knew he was good, it does seem like he's picked it up a level in recent times.

His goalscoring exploits at St James' Park aren't exactly a well-documented part of his game, as you'd expect from a centre back – but he does pop up in important moments relatively frequently.

Over the past couple of seasons, his injury record has left a lot to be desired, and it's safe to say Spurs have missed him massively whenever he's been absent.

Romero's game has been characterised by putting his body on the line, with his no-nonsense defending his most tangible quality.

Add to that his calmness in possession and his leadership qualities, and you have an exceptional all-round centre back who would probably be one of the best in the world if it wasn't for the club he plays for at present (sorry Spurs fans, it's true).

There have been rumours in recent times about his future, with many top clubs sniffing around in the hopes of gaining his signature, and who can blame them with the quality he has?

How long Spurs can hold onto such a prized asset is yet to be seen, and the feelings around his future being elsewhere, especially if Tottenham find themselves in a position with no Europe next season, feel like they aren't going away any time soon.

The perfect blend of footballing ability and unadulterated shithousery, Cristian Romero is quickly becoming a top, top centre back.
