The Fantasy Premier League Shocks and Flops So Far

The Story So Far

Fantasy Premier League or FPL as most call it, has its moments of absolute glory and moments of despair. The feeling of getting over 80 points really makes your weekend, and then if you get 30 points then vice versa. Many use FPL experts who share their content on apps like TikTok and X, but I just choose my squad based off of who I personally think would do well. Obviously that has its drawbacks. What wasn’t expected this season were some of the players who have been a goldmine for FPL points. It really frustrates you knowing the player was there to be picked the whole time and you went with the most obvious pick. Naming no names of course.

The Shocks

Antoine Semenyo - Bournemouth Everyone knew that Antoine Semenyo was a classy player last season at Bournemouth, but no one ever expected the way he has played this season. In only 11 starts so far he has accumulated 6 goals and 4 assists, an absolutely insane haul. If he is starting, then FPL players know that they are guaranteed some points from Semenyo. So sure that over 64% of players have selected him in their squads. He is absolutely electric and what’s even more shocking is that he cost £7 million at the start of the season which has already now increased to £8.1 million.

Igor Thiago – Brentford The Brazilian big man had a tough first year in English football. In only 8 appearances last year before getting injured, he was unable to score a single goal. Fast forward to this year and the goals are coming thick and fast for the striker with 8 goals in 11 games which has been paying off for those that invested in the striker. He cost only £6 million which is less than half of Erling Haaland’s price. 60 points already for the Brentford striker and with his price still being so low at £6.3 million, it would be a wise investment.

Jurrien Timber – Arsenal It was expected that any Arsenal defender would pick up many FPL points this year, it’s a guarantee. However, it’s always a hard one to judge with the amount of rotation Mikel Arteta likes to have in his backline. Jurrien Timber has been able to make the right back position his own and has broken the record this season for the biggest individual gameweek haul with 48 points. He should be a guarantee in most sides with his attacking and defensive output.

Moises Caicedo – Chelsea In the FPL world, Moises Caicedo wasn’t nailed on in most people’s FPL teams at the start of this season. He is a world-class defensive midfielder, and as expected is superb in the defensive side of football. Yet, this season he has transformed his attacking game, making forward runs and initiating Chelsea’s attacks, especially without having Cole Palmer in the squad. He has already pocketed a decent 3 goals and 1 assist but he also guarantees points with his defensive contributions. Averaging 5.5 points a game, that is a very steady output for only £6.1 million at this point in time.

The Flops

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool It’s never easy putting the Egyptian King in a list that is slating his performance. This season hasn’t been Salah’s best and that’s an understatement. Coming in as the most expensive player costing £14.5 million at the start of this season, his price has dropped to £14.2 million and it’s surprising how it hasn’t dropped further. He hasn’t even necessarily been unproductive with 4 goals and 2 assists in 11 starts but the price tag is what puts him in this list.

Florian Wirtz – Liverpool Yes, it’s a Liverpool double and won’t be making many Liverpool fans happy. It has been a very rough start from Florian Wirtz, not contributing a single goal or assist this season in the league. It is always hard transitioning from one league to another, but the price tag and expectations from the German meant that FPL players are avoiding him at all costs in their squads. Hopefully he can replicate his Bundesliga form soon enough.

Matz Sels – Nottingham Forest 11 games and no clean sheets for the Belgian goalkeeper. That is enough to put him in this list. It’s not been a good start for Forest this season as they sit in 19th place. Goals are hard to come by in the squad and defensively they have looked extremely poor, looking like they are going to concede every game. It’s harsh to pick out just Sels in the Forest defence, but he was an FPL must-have last year but this time round he hasn’t been able to emulate last year’s heroic performances.

Matheus Cunha – Manchester United There were high hopes for Matheus Cunha and The Red Devils at the beginning of the season. The former Wolves man is Prem-proven and was an absolute steal last year. It was an obvious pick as any going for Cunha at a reasonable price of £8 million. However, the Brazilian hasn’t been able to provide points for FPL players, with only 26 points so far from 1 goal in 8 starts. It’s a difficult one because he looks so dangerous going forward for United and he deserves more goals than he has this season. It just hasn’t fallen for him yet.
