The Flick Way Forward For Barcelona

29/05/24 12:44

Hansi Flick signed a 2 year contract with Barcelona today, after Xavi’s contract termination was confirmed. The German coach will take over from the 2024/25 season, although the squad planning will already begin from this week.

Flick likes his teams to play direct football and requires his team to press high. The manager believes that the Barcelona squad is bursting with potential and should have no problems adapting to this approach. Players like Gavi and Fermin are excellent pressers off the ball and will certainly have key roles under the new coach. Ronald Araujo will be very important for Flick to implement his high line defense as well.

One of the challenges for the coach will be to bring Robert Lewandowski back to his best level. The Polish striker played the best football of his career under Flick at Bayern and whilst he has struggled for form this season, the club will hope that this will be a successful reunion for the two. Lewandowski is currently the main goal scorer for the team and thus, having him in good form will be vital if Barcelona want to win anything next season.

Flick will already be informed about Barcelona’s financial struggles which is why there shouldn’t be too much movement from the Blaugranas in the summer window.

Under Xavi, the club were linked with Nico Williams, Joshua Kimmich and Bernardo Silva. Whilst it is true that Kimmich played some of his best football under Hansi Flick as well, it remains to be seen if Flick sees his as a single pivot. What’s certain is that Barcelona will need to sign the long awaited Busquets replacement this summer.

The coach will also have to decide on the continuity of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo. One signing to keep an eye out for is that of Xavi Simmons, who is set to leave PSG on loan again. He wants to return to Barcelona and would slot right in the German manager’s system, both from the left and the centre.

Hansi Flick has reportedly kept an eye on the Barcelona youth teams over the course of last season and already knows which youngsters he wants to add to the first team dynamics for next season. Whilst players like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi are expected to keep their spots in the first team, Mikayil Faye is another name to keep an eye on. The Senegalese already has offers from clubs around Europe, despite not yet making his first team debut for Barcelona. The preseason squad list will be an indication on which players can make the jump to the first team under Flick.

Whilst it seems like Hansi Flick has a busy few days ahead of him, the German manager certainly seems up to the task. His winning mentality and experience could be exactly what this team needs to go to the next level. Exciting times ahead for Barcelona.
