The Lions picked up yet another victory in the Championship on Wednesday night , and now they find themselves knocking on the door of the automatic promotion places. A wonder strike from Femi Azeez opened the scoring, while defender Tristan Crama delivered a goal and two assists in a man-of-the-match display. The two have been at the forefront of much of the Lions' successes this season as we investigate just how important they are in the Millwall side.
The 24-year-old joined the South London side from League One Reading ahead of the 2024/2025 campaign. Azeez produced four goals and five assists in his debut campaign, having made 34 appearances in the Championship. Fast forward to this season, and Azeez has quickly become the main man for Millwall. A constant attacking threat on the right-hand side with pinpoint delivery and an eye for goal, it's no surprise that he has been mentioned alongside the best players in the division. His strike against Birmingham was one worthy of winning any match, a potential candidate for goal of the season.

Azeez is the Lions' top scorer with eight goals to his name, including a run of goals in four consecutive matches in October. This form earned him a nomination for PFA Championship Fans' Player of the Month, eventually won by Coventry City's Brandon Thomas-Asante. Azeez has also been the key creative spark in this Millwall side. Alex Neil's system works in the interests of the winger, seeing plenty of the ball in wide areas and having plenty of aerial threats to look for in the middle. His performances have attracted interest from fellow clubs, having been linked with a move to Ipswich Town on deadline day. The Tractor Boys offered £15 million for Azeez, though it was turned down by the Millwall hierarchy.
Another big name for Millwall is defender Tristan Crama. The Frenchman has been a rock in the Millwall backline and has contributed his fair share in the attacking half. Crama has started all 34 Championship matches for Millwall this season, and it hasn't taken long for him to become a fan favourite. The 24-year-old ranks amongst the highest for defensive contributions in the division, having helped his side to 13 clean sheets, the most in the division. Utilised at both right-back and centre-back, Crama has become a jack of all trades for Millwall, and his contributions against Birmingham even left him in shock in the post-match interview.

Crama set up Azeez's opening goal before putting it on a plate for Jake Cooper to make it 3-0 early in the second half. A commendable and consistent performer, Crama has appeared frequently in the Championship Team of the Week. It would be no surprise to see Crama becoming the topic of transfer interest in the upcoming summer transfer window, though he won't be in any rush to leave when Millwall are in the Premier League.
At the start of the season, the question would've been, 'Is this the year Millwall finally reaches the play-offs?' Now, many are wondering if the Lions have a genuine chance of automatic promotion. Sitting just four points adrift of Middlesbrough in second, having both played the same number of matches, there really could be a fairytale ending on the cards. The next two matches will be vital in deciding the Lions' fate. Visits to both Preston and Hull are on the horizon, both of whom are in and amongst the play-off picture.
Millwall themselves have breathing room within the play-offs, sitting nine points clear of Southampton in seventh. Win the next two, and Millwall realistically has a top-six spot to lose, all while piling the pressure on the top two. This could also make the game at the Riverside Stadium a six-pointer in the promotion hunt. In all my years as a Millwall fan, I have come to learn that we never do things the easy way, so I will come into the back end of this season with an open mind and no expectations. That said, I don't think I can stomach another play-off bottle, having watched on as Blackburn broke 15,000 hearts on the final day of the 2022/2023 season. If Crama and Azeez continue to flourish, then I see us being right among the mix come the end of the season.
