The Premier League is Introducing Another New Rule, and It's One We Can Actually Get Behind

Have you ever got annoyed with a player time-wasting? Ever sworn at a goalkeeper going down after making a simple save? If your answer was yes, then we have good news! In the 2026/27 season, the Premier League has finally answered your prayers, or your vast amount of swearing. From now on, if a goalkeeper needs the physios to come on, an outfield player must be taken off the pitch for one minute.

That is correct, football fans. The Premier League has finally got it right. After years of goalkeepers being able to do whatever they want, they will now actually be punished for it.

From now on, if a goalkeeper goes down and must signal for the physios to come onto the pitch, the manager has 10 seconds to pick a player to come off for one minute. However, if they fail to do that, then the captain will be the player who makes way for that minute.

There are a few questions now. Does this mean cramp will no longer exist? Suddenly, no goalkeeper will ever feel that twinge in their leg and need to go down? What happens if the goalkeeper is the captain? Then the main one: will this actually be enforced all season, or just for the first few months?
