The Premier League's Unsung Flop

The Premier League's Unsung Flop

You may think we've jumped the gun in labelling someone as a 'flop', but this club's record-signing is failing to deliver on his value. Brighton's Georginio Rutter is having a season to forget, to put it kindly. His struggles continued in the derby defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday, and fans are voicing their displeasure over the Frenchman's performances.

High Expectations

Rutter joined the Seagulls in August 2024 from Leeds United, having activated the £40 million release clause for the attacker. The 23-year-old had flourished in the Championship for the Yorkshire side, featuring in all 48 league matches as Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion. His level of performance attracted attention from top-flight clubs, and it was not long before Tony Bloom had his say in securing their target.

Brighton has established a reputation for scouting and acquiring top prospects in European football, and Rutter had arrived with high praise and expectations from many in the footballing realm. Primarily featuring in an advanced role behind the striker, Rutter delivered five goals and three assists in 28 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign. This included a goal in victory at Old Trafford, courtesy of a precedented howler by Andre Onana in the Manchester United net. While the contributions may not have shown it, Rutter was an integral part of Brighton's attacking quartet. His effortless dribbling and ability to take on and beat defenders left many thinking that they'd struck gold with his arrival.

Fast forward to this campaign, and you'd think that we were talking about a different player. The Frenchman has failed to make the same impact for Brighton this campaign; the performance against Palace received its fair share of criticism from the majority. Rutter committed more fouls than any other player on the pitch (5), most of those coming after chasing his first touch. A player struck by confidence has become more of a burden than an asset in this Brighton side, having been outshone by 17-year-old debutant Harry Howell in the derby defeat.

The Bark Don't Match The Bite

Wasteful in possession has been a common factor surrounding Rutter's showings this season, having been dispossessed 51 times in the Premier League – over three times per 90 minutes. His rot in form has left Brighton slipping down the Premier League table, managing just one win in their last 12 league matches. That win came against Burnley at the start of the year, Rutter on the scoresheet for just the second time in the campaign.

What is going wrong for Rutter this season? Tensions are already boiling over around the club regarding their poor form, with most of the pointers facing manager Fabian Hurzeler. The 32-year-old was targeted with boos on the weekend, later acknowledging that his side is facing a difficult period. Hurzeler has taken charge of 74 matches for Brighton since his appointment in June 2024, leading his side to 16 wins in 38 Premier League matches in the 2024/2025 campaign. Safe to say that record will not be matched this time around, the Seagulls having seven victories to their name in 25 league matches.

Seagulls Flying Down

Winless in their last four, a trend of uninspiring displays and wasted chances falls back onto the management team's shoulders . No longer are we seeing dazzling displays from Kaoru Mitoma on the flank, while Danny Welbeck's scoring frenzy has dried up with immediate effect. It is no coincidence that the form of the players has dropped significantly, and it is no surprise that Hurzeler has come under growing pressure in recent weeks.

Albeit the loss of Joao Pedro to Chelsea has proven to be a big miss. The Brazilian was the standout performer for Brighton in his two seasons on the South Coast, scoring 20 goals (all competitions) in his debut campaign, the club's highest scorer in a single season since Glenn Murray in 2016/2017. Brighton failed to sign a notable replacement for the forward but did pluck out £30 million for 18-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas from the Greek side Olympiacos. The young striker has shown promise when called upon for his side, including a remarkable acrobatic effort in stoppage time to snatch a point against Bournemouth.

That said, the identity of the side appears to have been lost in recent displays. Spineless sideward passing, Carlos Baleba looking like a liability in the midfield, and Rutter being mocked for his attempts at playing football.
